What is the difference between Full Time Full Stack Software Engineer vs Front End Developer?

AspectFull Time Full Stack Software EngineerFront End Developer
Primary FocusDeveloping both client-side and server-side applicationsDesigning and implementing user interfaces and user experience
Required SkillsProficiency in multiple programming languages, databases, and frameworksStrong skills in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and UI/UX design
Work EnvironmentCollaborates across backend and frontend teams, often in full project cyclesPrimarily works on UI/UX, often within frontend frameworks
Common UsageUsed in roles requiring full application development expertiseUsed in roles focused on user interface and experience design

While Full Time Full Stack Software Engineers handle both backend and frontend development, Front End Developers specialize in creating engaging user interfaces. The full stack role requires broader technical skills across the entire application stack, whereas front end roles focus on the visual and interactive aspects of software.

What are Full Time Full Stack Software Engineers?

Full Time Full Stack Software Engineers are professionals who work on both the front-end and back-end of web applications, handling the development of user interfaces as well as server-side logic, databases, and APIs. Being 'full time' means they are employed on a standard, ongoing basis rather than as contractors or part-timers. These engineers are skilled in multiple programming languages and frameworks, allowing them to build, deploy, and maintain complete software solutions. Their responsibilities often include collaborating with other team members, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring the overall functionality and performance of applications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Full Time Full Stack Software Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Time Full Stack Software Engineer, you need proficiency in both front-end and back-end programming languages (such as JavaScript, Python, or Java), web frameworks, and a solid understanding of computer science fundamentals, often supported by a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, cloud platforms (AWS, Azure), databases (SQL/NoSQL), and CI/CD pipelines is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication make someone stand out in this role. These skills ensure robust, scalable applications and smooth collaboration across multidisciplinary teams in dynamic development environments.

What is the average salary of a full stack software engineer?

The average salary of a full stack software engineer varies by experience, location, and industry, but typically ranges from $70,000 to $120,000 annually in many regions. Senior roles with specialized skills in frameworks like React or Node.js can earn higher, often exceeding $130,000. Entry-level positions generally start around $60,000 to $80,000.

Are full stack software engineers in demand?

Full stack software engineers are in high demand due to their ability to work on both front-end and back-end development, making them valuable in many industries. Employers seek candidates with skills in programming languages, frameworks, and tools like JavaScript, React, Node.js, and cloud platforms. The role often offers competitive salaries and opportunities for growth in a rapidly evolving tech landscape.

Is full stack worth it in 2026?

Full stack software engineers are expected to remain in demand in 2026 due to their versatility in handling both front-end and back-end development. Skills in popular frameworks, cloud platforms, and continuous learning will enhance job prospects, making the role valuable for those seeking a comprehensive development skill set.

Will Fullstack be replaced by AI?

Full Stack Software Engineers perform tasks that involve designing, developing, and maintaining both frontend and backend systems, which require problem-solving, creativity, and understanding of complex systems. While AI tools can assist with coding and automation, they are unlikely to fully replace the need for human engineers who adapt to new technologies, troubleshoot issues, and create innovative solutions. Continuous learning and proficiency in programming languages and frameworks remain essential for full stack roles.

What are some common challenges Full Stack Software Engineers face when balancing front-end and back-end responsibilities?

Full Stack Software Engineers often juggle multiple tasks across both front-end and back-end development, which can make prioritizing work a challenge. They need to stay updated on a wide range of technologies and frameworks, ensuring seamless integration between user interfaces and server-side logic. Communication with specialized team members, like UX designers or DevOps engineers, is crucial for aligning on project requirements and maintaining efficient workflows. Adapting quickly to changing project needs and troubleshooting issues that span the entire tech stack are common aspects of the role.

Job description

From telescopes to software architecture, Observable Space provides the foundational elements every organization needs to operate in space. Observable Space is unlocking continuous, real-time observations of space with the industry's first line of vertically integrated hardware and software products. The company is the result of a merger between PlaneWave Instruments, the leader in advanced telescope design and manufacturing in the US, and OurSky, a company founded by SpaceX's former VP of software engineering to create a developer platform for space data applications. Observable Space's full line of products serves all sectors of the space industry including commercial, science, education, and government customers, as well as astronomy enthusiasts discovering the cosmos.
Observable Space is backed by top institutional investors-Upfront Ventures, Oceans Ventures, Venrex, Marlinspike Partners, and Embedded Ventures.
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Full Stack Software Engineer to join our dynamic team. This role will involve deep engagement with our backend microservices, javascript front ends, and c++ edge processing applications. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in software engineering, with specific expertise in distributed systems, relational database design, reactive frontend programming, and a keen eye for design. This role will report to the Manager of Platform Engineering.
Key Responsibilities
  • Design, build, and maintain backend microservices, reactive frontends, and C++ edge applications.
  • Contribute to architectural decisions for distributed systems and ensure technical scalability.
  • Design and optimize relational database schemas, ETL pipelines, and data warehousing solutions.
  • Debug and resolve complex production issues across the full software stack (backend, frontend, and edge).
  • Ensure high reliability and performance in production systems.
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams to define and deliver solutions for our customers.
  • Write clear technical documentation, including RFCs, design specifications, and product requirements, for multi-team projects.
  • Participate in design and code reviews, promoting best practices in test-driven development.

Basic Qualifications
  • 5+ years of experience in a relevant software engineering role.
  • Strong programming skills in Java, Kotlin, C++, or C# (we love our statically typed object oriented languages!).
  • Excellent data modeling skills- extensive experience working with RDBMSs, ETL processes, and data warehousing.
  • Experience in a test-driven development environment.
  • Acute product sense, placing an emphasis on user experience.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast paced dynamic environment while utilizing data to pivot to the most important task on hand.
  • An iterative mindset- perfect is the enemy of good.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Kotlin for backend programming and have an allergy to monolithic frameworks and ORMs.
  • Experience with TypeScript and React to create complex user interfaces.
  • Experience working with foreign function interfaces to call rust and c++ from the JVM.
  • A love of astronomy, physics, and science.

What We Offer
  • Competitive Compensation - A salary package aligned with industry standards and your experience.
  • Equity Opportunities - Take part in our success with stock options.
  • Flexible Work Environment - Enjoy working from our office or in a hybrid work setup with the flexibility to work remotely part of the week. We require a minimum of 3 days per week in our office to support collaboration and team culture. (LA Office only)
  • Unlimited PTO - Take the time you need with our flexible, trust-based vacation policy, including paid holidays. We encourage everyone to rest, recharge, and take care of themselves.
