Job description

The New Republicis looking for a talented and creative front-end developer who obsesses over the needs of users and who can craft elegant, polished designs that will improve user experience-and encourage user interaction-on all platforms and devices, optimizing for SEO at every turn to attract new readers and satisfy our loyal ones. The front-end developer will identify, design, and build editorial templates, as well as manage third-party systems associated with the advertising and marketing products.

You bring strong product instincts and enjoy proposing improvements-from new interactive storytelling forms to new editorial tools-and possess a pixel-perfect attention to detail. You must be committed to collegiality and excellence in everything you do.

This is a full-time position and is currently fully remote; however, there are occasional mandatory meetings in New York City throughout the year.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work closely with the art director, digital director, senior developer, and back-end developers to launch new and elegant products (and to improve existing ones), while prioritizing multiple feature requests and product bugs.
  • Execute design guidelines that are ADA and WCAG compliant to ensure consistent good user experiences across platforms for all readers.
  • Strong CSS skills, including modern SCSS with nesting and a component-based approach.
  • Collaborate with editorial and business departments to distill broad feature objectives and loosely defined requests into clearly scoped, production-ready technical solutions for mobile, tablet, and desktop.
  • Partner with the Interim Publisher, CFO, and legal stakeholders to implement front-end privacy controls and consent mechanisms in accordance with jurisdiction-specific requirements provided by the Interim Publisher.
  • Define product goals, map user flows and prototype interactions, and oversee the building process.
  • Develop quality product prototypes.
  • Partner closely with the lead developer on architecture, implementation, and code quality.
  • Collaborate with the digital director, senior developer, and back-end developers to produce designs with clean, performant, maintainable code.
  • Keep tabs on best practices and trends in digital media to inform future projects to grow TNR's audience.
  • Communicate regularly with the product manager on project status, needs, and milestones.
  • Implement and maintain analytics and tagging integrations (GTM, GA4, and third-party tools).
  • Contribute to daily code reviews.
  • Document technical builds, fixes, and debugging on projects that you lead or to which you contribute.

HOW WE BUILD

  • LLM model assisted development for rapid iteration with strong engineering judgment
  • Code reviews and automated checks as the source of truth
  • Performance, accessibility, and SEO are first-class concerns
  • We're actively modernizing our stack and want someone excited to help lead that evolution

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrated experience utilizing React and Javascript
  • 3+ years experience with front-end development
  • Media experience preferred

  • Experience creating and optimizing mobile web applications
  • Experience optimizing for SEO
  • Experience improving performance and Core Web Vitals.
  • Familiarity with analytical and diagnostic tools for web performance
  • Ability to communicate technical issues to a nontechnical staff
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines in a fast-paced editorial environment
  • Ability to handle multiple short- and long-term projects simultaneously
