Full Time Freelance Software Developer information

What is a full time freelance software developer?

A Full Time Freelance Software Developer is a professional who works independently, rather than as an employee, to design, develop, and maintain software for clients. They typically find and manage their own projects, set their own schedules, and may work for multiple clients at once. Although they are not tied to one employer, they often work similar hours to traditional employees to complete full-time workloads. Their responsibilities may include coding, debugging, testing, and client communication. Freelance software developers need both technical expertise and self-management skills for success.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a full time freelance software developer?

To thrive as a Full Time Freelance Software Developer, you need strong programming skills, a solid understanding of software development principles, and experience with relevant frameworks or languages, often backed by a computer science degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, project management tools such as Jira or Trello, and cloud platforms is highly beneficial. Excellent self-management, client communication, and problem-solving abilities help freelancers stand out in a competitive market. These skills ensure you can deliver quality work independently, collaborate effectively with clients, and manage multiple projects successfully.

How do full time freelance software developers typically manage client communication and project deadlines?

Full-time freelance software developers often juggle multiple projects and clients, making effective communication and deadline management essential. They usually rely on project management tools like Trello, Jira, or Asana to track tasks and deadlines, and schedule regular check-ins with clients via email or video calls to ensure alignment. Setting clear expectations about availability and deliverables early in the project helps avoid misunderstandings. Additionally, many freelancers allocate buffer time for unexpected issues to ensure they can consistently meet deadlines and maintain a positive client relationship.

About Xtillion
Xtillion is a fast-growing AI solutions firm helping organizations build, operationalize, and scale high-value AI systems. We deliver end-to-end solutions, from design to deployment in real-world environments, combining deep data expertise with a strong focus on measurable business impact.
Based in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Xtillion partners with organizations across U.S. industries to solve complex, high-impact business problems. We invest in our people and offer opportunities to work on technically challenging, customer-facing systems that directly influence client success.
About the Role
We're looking for an Engineering Manager to lead teams building and deploying AI-powered, production-grade software systems directly into customer environments.
In this role, you'll operate at the intersection of technical leadership and client engagement. You'll be responsible for guiding engineers through ambiguous problem spaces, ensuring high-quality execution, and maintaining strong alignment between business objectives and technical solutions.
This position is ideal for leaders who enjoy being hands-on when needed, working closely with clients, mentoring engineers, and owning the successful delivery of complex, real-world systems.
What You'll Do
  • Lead and support teams of software and data engineers delivering AI-enabled systems in production
  • Own the technical execution and delivery of client-facing projects, ensuring quality, reliability, and outcomes
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate business needs into production-ready systems
  • Guide system and solution design across infrastructure, backend services, data platforms, and AI workflows
  • Provide technical mentorship and coaching to engineers through problem solving sessions, code reviews, design discussions, and regular feedback
  • Balance short-term delivery needs with long-term system maintainability and scalability
  • Stay current with emerging AI and software technologies and apply them pragmatically to client solutions

What We're Looking For
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field
  • 6+ years of full-stack software engineering experience
  • 1-3 years of experience leading or managing technical teams
  • Demonstrated ability to set technical direction for client-facing initiatives, balancing delivery commitments, stakeholder expectations, and technical quality
  • Proven ability to lead client projects, build strong relationships, and deliver on-time results aligned with client goals.
  • Experience designing, building and maintaining production-grade systems in cloud environments (e.g., AWS, Azure, etc.)
  • Expertise in software engineering best practices, system design, and agile delivery methodologies
  • Experience with version control systems (e.g., GitHub) and CI/CD processes
  • Strong written and verbal English communication skills

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience building or deploying AI-enabled systems, including LLM-based workflows (e.g., RAG, agentic systems, fine-tuning)
  • Experience with data-intensive systems, including ETL/ELT pipelines and analytical platforms
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code (e.g., Terraform)
  • Experience with workflow orchestration (e.g., Airflow, AWS Step Functions)
  • Strong experience with SQL and relational or analytical data systems
  • Associate-level cloud architect certification (e.g., Azure Solutions Architect Associate, AWS Solutions Architect Associate, or equivalent)

Why Join Xtillion
At Xtillion, you'll take ownership of meaningful, production-grade systems and work on software that is relied upon in real-world environments. You'll join a fast-moving team where engineers influence technical direction and uphold strong engineering standards, supported by competitive compensation and meaningful opportunities for career growth.
Ready to Build What Matters?
