HR Operator

Full-Time | Remote | United States

About Shift Fractional

Shift Fractional is a modern fractional HR managed service firm that partners with growing organizations to provide outsourced HR leadership and day-to-day people operations. Rather than hiring a single HR employee, our clients gain access to an experienced team of HR professionals with expertise across employee relations, compliance, recruiting, performance management, benefits, compensation, investigations, leadership coaching, and organizational development.

As an HR Operator at Shift Fractional, you will not work alone. You will be backed by a collaborative bench of experienced HR specialists and leaders who provide support, guidance, and subject matter expertise whenever needed. This allows you to focus on building strong client relationships and leading day-to-day HR operations while leveraging the resources of an entire HR team.

Position Overview

Shift Fractional is seeking a highly organized, people-focused HR Operator to own and manage day-to-day HR operations for 2–4 client relationships. This full-time, remote role is ideal for an HR professional who enjoys building trusted partnerships, working independently, and serving as a strategic extension of each client’s leadership team.

You will serve as the primary HR contact for assigned clients and their employees, helping ensure a positive employee experience while managing HR operations, supporting leaders, and partnering with the Shift Fractional consulting team on strategic initiatives and complex matters.

Key Responsibilities

Client Relationship Management & HR Operations

  • Own and manage day-to-day HR support for 2–4 assigned clients.
  • Build strong, trusted relationships with client leaders, managers, and employees.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for employee questions related to policies, benefits, payroll, PTO, onboarding, and other employment matters.
  • Provide responsive, high-quality HR support while maintaining professionalism, discretion, and confidentiality.
  • Escalate complex employee relations, compliance, and strategic matters to senior Shift Fractional consultants as appropriate.
  • Coordinate and lead regular client check-ins to identify needs, priorities, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Manage competing client priorities effectively while maintaining clear communication and follow-through.

Employee Support & People Operations

  • Coordinate onboarding and offboarding activities.
  • Maintain employee records, HR documentation, and personnel files.
  • Support payroll administration, benefits coordination, and leave administration.
  • Ensure HR practices remain aligned with applicable employment laws, company policies, and client requirements.
  • Support employee relations matters, investigations, performance concerns, and workplace issue resolution in partnership with senior consultants.
  • Help foster positive, inclusive, and engaging workplace cultures across client organizations.

Recruiting & Talent Support

  • Coordinate recruiting efforts, interviews, candidate communications, and hiring workflows.
  • Manage job postings and support candidate pipeline activity.
  • Prepare offer letters, onboarding documentation, and related employment materials.
  • Partner with hiring managers to support a consistent, thoughtful candidate experience.

HR Administration, Compliance & Process Improvement

  • Maintain HR systems, forms, workflows, and operational processes across assigned clients.
  • Support policy implementation, handbook updates, compliance initiatives, audits, and reporting.
  • Identify operational gaps and recommend practical process improvements that enhance efficiency and the employee experience.
  • Collaborate with the broader Shift Fractional consulting team to deliver consistent, high-quality service across client engagements.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience in Human Resources, People Operations, or a related field.
  • Experience serving as a primary HR contact for employees, managers, or client stakeholders.
  • Experience managing multiple priorities, projects, or client relationships preferred.
  • Education industry experience strongly preferred.
  • Strong understanding of core HR operations, including onboarding, employee relations, benefits, payroll coordination, recruiting, and compliance.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building skills.
  • Strong organizational, project-management, and time-management abilities.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating closely with a broader team.
  • High level of discretion and sound judgment when handling confidential information.
  • Experience with HRIS platforms, payroll systems, and Microsoft Office or Google Workspace.
  • Comfort working in a remote environment and communicating effectively across multiple client teams.

What We’re Looking For

We’re looking for someone who is:

  • Personable, approachable, and highly responsive
  • Organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage 2–4 client relationships
  • Comfortable working independently and making sound decisions
  • Service-oriented with a strong sense of ownership
  • A proactive problem solver who follows through
  • Passionate about creating exceptional employee and client experiences
  • Excited to build long-term client relationships while leveraging the expertise of the Shift Fractional team

Schedule & Work Environment

  • Full-time, remote position
  • Candidates may be located anywhere in the United States
  • Regular business-hour availability is expected, with flexibility to support client needs across time zones

Why Join Shift Fractional?

This is a unique opportunity to enjoy the ownership and relationship-building of an in-house HR role while benefiting from the collaboration, mentorship, and expertise of an established fractional HR consulting firm.

You will have the autonomy to lead your clients’ day-to-day HR functions, build meaningful partnerships, and make a visible impact-while drawing on a deep bench of Shift Fractional specialists whenever strategic or complex situations arise.
