What is the difference between Full Time Film Editor vs Video Editor?

AspectFull Time Film EditorVideo Editor
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in film, media, or related fieldOften requires a degree or certification in media or digital editing
Work EnvironmentFilm studios, post-production houses, or media companiesBroadcast stations, digital media firms, or freelance settings
Industry UsagePrimarily in film, television, and cinematic projectsIn digital content, commercials, online videos, and social media

While both roles involve editing video content, a Full Time Film Editor typically works on film and television projects within a studio or post-production environment, often requiring specific film-related skills and experience. A Video Editor may work across various digital platforms, often with a broader focus on online content and shorter formats. The choice depends on the industry and type of projects you aim to pursue.

Is there a demand for film editors?

The demand for film editors remains steady as the entertainment industry continues to produce films, television shows, and digital content. Skilled editors proficient in editing software like Adobe Premiere Pro or Final Cut Pro are sought after, especially with the growth of streaming platforms and online media. Job opportunities can vary based on industry trends and regional markets.

How much money do film editors make?

Film editors in full-time roles typically earn a median annual salary of around $60,000 to $80,000, with experienced editors or those working on major projects earning higher. Salaries can vary based on experience, location, industry, and the complexity of the projects, and many editors also work freelance or on a contract basis. Proficiency with editing software like Adobe Premiere Pro or Avid Media Composer can influence earning potential.

Is AI replacing video editors?

AI technology is increasingly used to assist video editors by automating tasks like color correction, editing, and effects, but it does not fully replace the creative and decision-making skills of a professional film editor. Human editors are still essential for storytelling, nuanced editing, and creative input, especially in complex projects. AI tools serve as complementary resources to improve efficiency and productivity in editing workflows.

Is video editing still in demand in 2026?

Full-time film editors continue to be in demand as video content remains essential across industries like marketing, entertainment, and social media. Proficiency with editing software such as Adobe Premiere Pro or Final Cut Pro and staying updated on industry trends are important for maintaining employability in this evolving field.
