Description
Summary: Under direction of the Corporal, Sergeant and Lieutenant, performs a variety of work as assigned in a wide range of areas focused on supervision of detainees. Responsible for the supervision of detainees within his/her assigned areas; maintains order and security through fair and impartial application of the Luna County Detention Center policies and procedures and accepted security and supervisory practices; and maintain the highest level of security possible while ensuring safe and humane treatment of all detainees including protection of their rights within the facility.
Examples of Duties
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Communicates effectively with a varied population of offenders, including individuals from diverse ethnic, racial, cultural, and economic backgrounds. This may include persons for whom English is not a primary language, persons with developmental and learning disorders, or individuals with a wide variety of psychiatric and physical disorders.
Provides supervision of offenders within the housing areas of the jail. This will include direct supervision during meal service, security checks, medication distribution, and random or scheduled housing and cell searches.
Responsible for the general detainee's behavior in areas assigned as their duty station, and directly supervises and escorts detainees within the secured perimeter of the jail as assigned.
Patrols and maintains security of designated areas of the facility and controls traffic to and from specific areas; conducts physical searches of detainees to protect the safety of all detention center personnel, detainees, and visitors; and conducts physical searches and inspections of cells.
Monitors detainee's well-being; summons medical aid; communicates with medical staff; and assists the medical staff according to the medical directives.
Releases detainees and their property according to established procedures, bail, court order or as otherwise ordered by appropriate authorities.
Assigns and directs work on detainee.
Efficiently and accurately completes detention center paperwork including, but not limited to booking, release records, reports, logs, requests, memos, and rosters.
Accesses information from computer system in response for information requests from other law enforcement and court agencies.
Appropriately responds to emergencies in the jail, which may include the following: Detainee assaults, fires, riots, detainee disturbances, explosions, natural disasters, and hostage situations, etc. Immediately and appropriately responds to control these circumstances. This may include the use of appropriate levels of force through physical management of combative, violent, hostile, and assaultive offenders.
Accurately operates a variety of equipment including computers, printers, FAX, fingerprint machines, physical restraint devices, radios, fire extinguishers, intercom systems, and telephone.
Works a variety of rotating shifts, as well as rotation of positions, and may perform other duties as assigned or required.
ACADEMY CADET:
Under close supervision of the Detention Center Academy Training Sergeant, and assigned training/instructional staff, cadets will undergo an intensive training academy that involves classroom instruction and rigorous physical training. Cadets will learn to provide for the safety, security and welfare of detainees, fellow officers, staff and the public in a building/section on a variety of jail post. After successful completion of the academy and on the job (FTO) training, the Detention Officer will directly supervise detainees and is engaged on all functions related to their welfare, safety and security of the housing unit to which assigned.
Physical Agility Standards:
1-Mile run 15:00 minutes
300-Meter run -75 Seconds
Push Ups-18 minimum (1-minute time limit)
Male- 18 minimum, but should give maximum effort
Female- 18 minimum (may switch to a modified pushup after pushup #5)
Sit-ups- 20 minimum, but should give maximum effort (1-minute time limit)
Cadets that fail to meet the minimum requirements of any part of the assessment will be given one additional opportunity to successfully pass.
The minimum physical agility standards will remain the same, however each cadet will be expected to show improvement each week.
Typical Qualifications
Education, Certification and Experience:
High school diploma or GED required. Must have a valid driver's license with no restrictions. All qualified applicants will be required to pass written test, oral interview, and background investigation. Post-offer of employment tests included medical exam, and drug screen.

Knowledge:
Detention operations, services and activities of adult detention standards, policies and procedures, and comprehensive detention programs; laws, regulations and procedures applicable to the operation of holding facilities and victim's rights; AFIS, and Offender Management Systems; Federal, State, and local law enforcement agencies, their functions, jurisdiction, and procedural and operational relationship to detention; Computer equipment and software for spreadsheets and databases: statistical analysis, reach methods and report presentation.
Ability:
Establish and maintain effective working relationships; analyze problems, identify appropriate solutions and project consequences of proposed actions; provide implementation in support of goals; make sound judgments and use discretion in applying and interpreting policies and procedures and in planning, assigning, directing, and evaluating the work of employees; use logical and creative thought processes to develop written specifications and/or oral instructions; comprehend and make inferences from material written in the English language; listen and communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; recall visual details; investigate incidents; interact effectively with individuals of varied social, economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds; learn and perform first aid and Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) recognize unusual medical, physical, or mental conditions of detainees; learn the use and care of weapons (including firearms), restraint and self-defense tactics; when required, use sufficient physical force.
Physical Demands:
The work requires considerable and strenuous physical exertion, such as frequent climbing; lifting objects over 50 pounds; crouching or crawling in restricted areas; and defending oneself or others from physical attack. Heavy physical demands are involved when circumstances with the facility require intervention with detainees including reacting quickly and effectively to physical confrontations and emergency situations; qualify with and safely use department approved and issued firearms and defensive weapons; wear required uniform articles and protective equipment for extended periods of time; work in housing units for prolonged periods; see clearly and recall visual details; speak clearly.

The work environment involves high risks with exposure to potentially dangerous situations or unusual environmental stress that require a range of safety and other precautions.
