Job description

Capital Planning and Facilities (CPF) works to ensure that Indiana University (IU) campuses are beautiful, functional, and sustainable supporting excellence in teaching, learning, research, and community engagement across the entire university. A unit within CPF, Facility Operations, maintains our physical campus to support research, teaching, and learning at IU Bloomington. As a unit of Capital Planning and Facilities, Facility Operations provides wide-ranging services all with the goal of creating a beautiful, well-functioning campus.
Job Summary
  • Maintains and repairs elevators, escalators, chairlifts, conveyors. and machine rooms/pits. Inspects wiring connection, control panel hookups, door installation, and alignment and clearance of car hoistway.
  • Operates elevator to determine power demand and tests power consumption to detect overload factors. Reads schematics and troubleshoots elevator malfunctions. May perform acceptance and routine inspections, witness tests, and report results of the inspection and testing.
  • Orders parts through supervisor. Repairs and replaces worn/damaged components as needed. Cleans, repairs, or replaces controller components as needed. Cleans machine room and elevator pits.
  • Removes passengers from stuck elevators.
  • Participates in the training of apprentices and/or other workers as needed.
  • Performs other general building maintenance as needed.
  • Drives vehicle.
Qualifications
EDUCATION
Required
  • High school diploma or equivalent (such as HSED or GED)
WORK EXPERIENCE
Required
  • DOL certificate in applicable trade
  • 5 years verifiable journey level experience
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES
Required
  • Valid Indiana elevator mechanic license upon date of hire
  • Valid driver's license and ability to be insured by Indiana University upon date of hire

  • Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in installation, maintenance, and repair of elevator systems and equipment.
  • Ability to perform troubleshooting, installation, and inspection.
  • Ability to work with wide variety of cultures and backgrounds.
Working Conditions / Demands
This role requires the ability to remain in a stationary position as well as the ability to move about the workplace for long durations. It requires effective communication, the ability to operate machinery, tools, and controls. The role requires the ability to ascend/descend ladders/stairs, and to position one's self in low level positions, detect a variety of chemicals and/or gases. The role requires the ability to ascend to rooftops and move in tight spaces to perform and complete inspections. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
