What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Full Time Electrical Motor Design Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Time Electrical Motor Design Engineer, you need a strong background in electrical engineering principles, motor design, and typically a bachelor's or master's degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with CAD software, simulation tools (like ANSYS Maxwell or MATLAB/Simulink), and adherence to industry standards are essential, and certifications like Professional Engineer (PE) can be advantageous. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective teamwork and communication skills set outstanding engineers apart. These competencies are crucial for developing efficient, reliable motor designs that meet technical specifications and client needs while supporting collaboration and innovation.

What is the difference between Full Time Electrical Motor Design Engineer vs Electrical Systems Engineer?

AspectFull Time Electrical Motor Design EngineerElectrical Systems Engineer
Primary FocusDesign and development of electrical motors and related componentsDesign and integration of electrical systems within larger projects
Required SkillsMotor theory, electromagnetic design, CAD tools for motor designElectrical circuit design, system integration, control systems
Work EnvironmentManufacturing, R&D labs, engineering firmsPower plants, automation, aerospace, and industrial sectors
CertificationsElectrical engineering degree, possibly motor-specific certificationsElectrical engineering degree, system certification (e.g., PE license)

While both roles require electrical engineering knowledge, the Full Time Electrical Motor Design Engineer specializes in creating and optimizing electrical motors, whereas the Electrical Systems Engineer focuses on designing and integrating complete electrical systems within larger projects. The roles often overlap in skills but differ in scope and application.

What are some of the main technical challenges faced by Electrical Motor Design Engineers in a full-time role?

Electrical Motor Design Engineers often encounter challenges such as meeting stringent efficiency and performance targets while balancing cost and manufacturability. They must also adapt designs for specific applications, such as electric vehicles or industrial machinery, which may require custom solutions and close collaboration with cross-disciplinary teams like mechanical engineers and project managers. Additionally, staying updated on evolving industry standards and integrating new materials or technologies can be demanding but offers valuable learning opportunities. Overcoming these challenges not only strengthens technical expertise but also enhances problem-solving and project management skills.

What does a Full Time Electrical Motor Design Engineer do?

A Full Time Electrical Motor Design Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and testing electric motors used in various applications such as vehicles, industrial machinery, or household appliances. They work on creating efficient, reliable, and cost-effective motor systems by selecting appropriate materials, analyzing performance, and ensuring compliance with industry standards. Their work often involves using simulation software, collaborating with cross-functional teams, and troubleshooting issues during the manufacturing process.

Job description

About Radiant

Radiant is an El Segundo, CA-based startup building the worldโ€™s first mass-produced, portable nuclear microreactors. The companyโ€™s first reactor, Kaleidos, is a 1-megawatt, fail-safe microreactor that can be transported anywhere power is needed and run for up to 5 years without refueling. Portable nuclear power with rapid-deploy capability can replace similar-sized diesel generators and provide critical asset support for hospitals, data centers, remote sites, and military bases. Radiantโ€™s unique, practical approach to nuclear development leverages modern software engineering to rapidly deliver safe, factory-built microreactors that use existing, well-qualified materials. Founded in 2020, Radiant is on track to test its first reactor at the Idaho National Laboratory this summer, with initial customer deliveries beginning in 2028.

About the Role

Radiant is seeking anย Electrical Motor Design Engineerย to own the architecture, technical direction, and execution of high-speed alternators and primary loop motors for our nuclear-driven power generation systems. This role leads the electric machine design function responsible forย our 1MWย high-speed rotating machinery central to commercializingย Earthโ€™sย first mass-produced nuclear reactors.ย

You will set the technical vision forย motorย design while guiding structural, thermal, and system integration efforts. As a player-coach, you will both contribute directly to design work and mentor a team of engineers to deliver safe, reliable, and production-ready generator systems.ย

This is a hands-on technical leadership role with significant cross-functional influence.ย

Responsibilities & Duties:

Technical Ownership & Architectureย
  • Own system-level architecture and technical roadmap for 1MW, 30krpm alternators and primary loop motors.

  • Lead electromagnetic design of permanent magnet machines for closed-loop Brayton cycle power systems.

  • Define and flow down generator requirements from system-level constraints.

  • Establish best practices for modeling, simulation, validation, and documentation.

  • Make key technical decisions on topology selection, magnetics, insulation systems, cooling strategies, and manufacturability.

  • Ensure designs meet performance, reliability, safety, and regulatory requirements.

Team Leadershipย
  • Lead and mentor a team of motor design engineers.

  • Conduct design reviews and provide guidance on electromagnetic, structural, and thermal analysis.

  • Drive technical prioritization, risk management, and execution planning.

  • Build engineering rigor, documentation standards, and repeatable development processes.

Cross-Functional Integrationย
  • Partner closely with turbomachinery, power electronics, thermal, packaging, and software teams.

  • Optimize electromechanical interfaces between generator, inverter, and control systems.

  • Collaborate with manufacturing to transition from prototype to scalable production.

  • Own technical engagement with external vendors and suppliers.

Prototyping, Testing & Validationย
  • Oversee development and qualification testing of electric machines.

  • Guide bench, dynamic, and system-level testing campaigns.

  • Lead root cause analysis and rapid design iteration cycles.

  • Maintain hands-on involvement in assembly, integration, and troubleshooting as needed.

Required Qualifications & Skills:

  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering with specialization in electric machines or rotating machinery.

  • 5+ years of experience designing high-voltage, high-power electric motors and/or generators.

  • Demonstrated expertise in permanent magnet motor design for +1kV, +1MW applications operating at up to 40,000 rpm.

  • Strong proficiency with electromagnetic analysis tools (Ansys Motor-CAD, Maxwell, or equivalent).

  • Experience with structural and thermal analysis of high-speed rotating machinery.

  • Deep understanding of motorโ€“inverter interactions and power electronics integration.

  • Experience leading complex electromechanical development efforts.

  • Hands-on experience with assembly, integration, and testing of electric machines.

Desired Qualifications & Skills:

  • 10+ years of generator design experience.

  • M.S. or Ph.D. in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering.

  • Knowledge of motor control systems including SVM.
