Job description

Assistant Teaching Professor of Creativity, College of the Arts
Job no: 501379
Work type: Regular Full-Time
Location: Glassboro, New Jersey
Categories: Faculty - College of Performing Arts
Assistant Teaching Professor Faculty Position
Department of Art
College of the Arts
Rowan University
The College of the Arts at Rowan University is seeking to hire a non-tenure track Assistant Teaching Professor with an appointment to begin July 1, 2026.
The College of the Arts is specifically interested in candidates who are passionate about teaching and mentoring students at the undergraduate and graduate levels. In addition to teaching responsibilities, successful candidates are expected to make meaningful and substantive service contributions to undergraduate and graduate programs and the department. Successful candidates are also expected to participate in professional development to stay current in their content area and evidence-based instructional approaches.
The PhD in Creativity at Rowan University is a unique PhD program that accepts dissertation-ready students with an MA or equivalent in any field. The students write a dissertation with a bespoke dissertation committee, hired from both inside and outside Rowan University, frequently in different disciplines so as to enhance the breadth of perspectives in advising the student's project. It is an intensive program in which the students complete the dissertation within three years. The program rests on a belief that creative thinking lies at the heart of innovation in all fields, and that the PhD needs to be taught focused on a student's way of thinking rather than on a body of existing field specific knowledge. We refer to this as transdisciplinary because each dissertation draws on the expertise it requires, irrespective of field. In addition to teaching course work within the program, the duties of this position will include intensive mentoring and support of all PhD in Creativity students, recruiting and reviewing applications, and designing the summer and winter intensive residences.
The successful candidate must have a PhD degree in the humanities and professional experience in an arts discipline that involves embodied cognition. The candidate must also have experience supervising PhD candidates in transdisciplinary projects, namely projects that draw upon disparate disciplines to research and write their dissertations. This hire also requires a candidate actively doing transdisciplinary research and writing.
The teaching position is a 12-month, full-time, non-tenure track appointment. Successful candidates will teach 30 credits per year, with an option to teach overload for additional compensation. Assistant Teaching Professor positions are renewable based on performance reviews and programmatic needs.
Complete applications will include:
  1. Cover letter
  2. Current detailed CV
  3. Statement of teaching philosophy that includes the candidate's commitment to inclusive teaching and mentoring practices and vision for the PhD in Creativity Program
  4. Graduate transcripts (unofficial copies acceptable for initial review)
  5. Names and contact information for at least three references; confidential letters will be requested if an application is moved forward

Review of applications will commence on April 20, 2026, and continue until suitable candidates have been identified. Applicants will need to submit the above materials via our online application system at jobs.rowan.edu/.
