Job description

Job Summary:

Works on research data reporting assignments that are of moderate diversity in scope. Exercises judgment within generally defined practices and policies in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions. Involves gathering, analyzing, and interpreting a wide variety of research data. Designs and conducts research including selecting data samples, developing research instruments, analyzing collected information according to established statistical methods, and developing recommendations based on research findings. Prepares reports, charts, tables, and other visual aids to interpret and communicate data and results.

We are seeking a full-time Data Analyst to become an integral part of our team. We offer a positive environment with dedicated colleagues in the Department of Neurology at UCSF. The Research Data Analyst will support epidemiologic studies, which aim to collect data from people with Parkinson's disease (PD), people at risk of developing PD, and other research volunteers to answer key scientific questions in the field.   

The Research Data Analyst will be the primary analyst for an observational multicenter study Parkinson's disease genetics study and will also participate in analyses of other related observational study datasets. 

The Research Data Analyst will have the following responsibilities: 1) conduct primary statistical analyses, including data tabulation and reporting, descriptive statistics, and multivariate and longitudinal data analyses; 2) conduct data quality control 3) contribute to analyses of genetic risk factors for PD among ancestrally diverse samples. Secondary responsibilities include facilitating harmonization of study data with external datasets, interpreting and writing up results for publication, assisting with progress reports; and engaging in grant-writing process including preparation of preliminary analyses. 

We are seeking a candidate who enjoys liaising with multiple study collaborators. The Research Data Analyst should show a strong interest in clinical research and a desire to contribute to the state of knowledge on genetics and other risk factors for Parkinson's disease. The Research Data Analyst must be able to multi-task, problem-solve, and apply creative solutions to new and unexpected situations with limited supervision.

Required Qualifications:

  • Proficiency with cloud-based computing    
  • Working knowledge of statistical genetic analysis for ancestrally diverse study samples  
  • Proficiency in statistics, data analysis, research methods and statistical packages such as SPSS, SAS, and/or R, or a related package  
  • Proficiency in applications such as MS Excel and PowerPoint for presenting summary reports, charts, tables, and other visual aids.

  • Must have excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills, and administrative skills

  • Candidates must possess the required qualifications by the time of hire    

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Masters of Science in Biostatistics
  • Familiarity with Parkinson's disease and other neurological disorders     
  • Familiarity with the development of relational databases    
  • Prior experience working with large and complex datasets    
  • Skills in project management     
  • Working knowledge of common organization- or research-specific and other computer application programs. These may include, but are not limited to, Box / Google Drive, Outlook, Zoom, Python, tools such as Slack, Github, Basecamp, connecting to servers / cloud computing systems    
  • Working knowledge of federal, state, and local research regulations and guidelines, and research practice methods in a laboratory or clinical setting    
  • Experience applying the following regulations and guidelines: Good Clinical Practice Guidelines, Health Information and Accountability Act (HIPAA), The Protection of Human Research Subjects, Committee on Human Research (CHR) regulations for recruitment and consent of research subjects, General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)
