Job description

Position Title: CAD Designer

Department Location: Graphic Services - Design

Reports To: Director of Design Services

Employees Supervised: None

Interrelationships: Internal graphics, production and sales staff;
External vendors and customers

FLSA Classification: Hourly

Employee Classification: Regular, full-time

Position Summary:

Responsible for the design and engineering work required turning a concept into a

design that can be manufactured and installed. Provides creative and effective design

solutions for the food service industry. To plan, design, and furnish interior

environments of commercial, and industrial buildings according to needs of clients.

Lays out complete products and prepares assembly and detail drawings, following the

general instructions and directions of a salesperson, project manager or designer.

Makes informed decisions such as strength of materials, weights, simple forces, and

Stresses. Works within established workflows for ongoing product development, assists on the development of new products, and directs the building and testing of prototypes.

Essential Job Function Time Allocations:

  • Modeling (25%): Identifies materials, components, structure and manufacturing options; prepares layouts, creates sketches, recommends color palettes, parts and assemblies. Analyzes various design requirements and recommends possible solutions or alternate constructions. Integrates clients wishes with knowledge of design and develops a plan to best accommodate function, artistic preference, and budget. Creates scale 3D models of prototypes.
  • Creates Drawings (40%): Prepares floor plan layouts, assembly, exterior or interior site and building concept drawings, and detail drawings for new or improved products, special machinery design, test equipment, tools, fixtures and gauge design. Originates and/or develops designs for products relating to defined customer needs or as possible proprietary items. Creates various detailed views needed for manufacturing, including isometric, dependent and piece-part views. Adds dimensions, tables, notes, and relations between components, etc. Adheres to design and manufacturing standards. Displays final drawings to verify completeness, clarity, accuracy, and approval status.
  • Product/Prototype Support (10%) Identifies design issues, generates and assesses alternatives/ facilitates discussions, agreement and resolution among key parties. As needed, produces revised drawings.
  • File Conversions (5%): Retrieves the design and converts the file into a suitable format for vendor and customer review and usage; provides package file and drawings.
  • File Set-up (5%): Submits final plans to production. Displays final drawing and converts the file into a suitable format for review and production usage.
  • File Maintenance (15%): Saves, files, and organizes art files and support files for efficient retrieval and future use by Operations and Sales.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Associates degree in engineering, industrial design, CAD or related.
  • Experience: Experience with materials selection, manufacturing processes, engineering fundamentals as well as computer-aided design.
  • Computer/Software and Office Equipment Skills: Prior experience with CAD software, including AutoCAD and Fusion (or equivalent CAD software like SolidWorks or Inventor). Experience with Sketchup preferred. Proficient with Microsoft Office.

Must have effective interaction and collaborative skills. Effective visual, written, and verbal communication skills are required. Must demonstrate a high level of

initiative and attention to detail. Ability to establish and maintain effective customer, visitor and vendor relationships by using well-developed and appropriate interpersonal skills.

Essential Physical/ Mental Requirements:

  • Must be able to sit for periods of extended times throughout the day.
  • Work is performed in an office setting. Position does occasionally interact with manufacturing personnel in the production areas and can be exposed to noise and fumes.
  • Must have good time management skills.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively digitally and in person with individuals to provide and gather information.
  • Must have the ability to maintain concentration and focus on tasks requiring timeliness and accuracy.

Specific Accountabilities:

A1: Confers with Sales Team, Project Managers, and vendors to identify functional requirements for the space and to ascertain aesthetic considerations and budgetary restrictions.

A2: Prepares layouts, assembly, and detail drawings for new or improved products.

A3: Analyzes various design requirements and recommends possible solutions or alternate constructions. Also prepares and evaluates tolerance stack-ups.

A4: Prepares sketchesby hand or computer-aided industrial design (CAD, Sketchup) showing possible options for layout, furniture, and equipment.

A5: Prepares drawings and documents for internal and external production and review. Makes revisions and changes as needed.

A7: Originates and/or develops designs for products relating to defined customer needs or as possible proprietary items. This also may include the adaptation of existing designs to new-customer applications.

A8: Conducts responsibilities in a positive, solution-driven manner. Sets an overall mood that is conducive to creativity.

A9: Functional knowledge of materials, production and assembly methods. Creates assembly guides, renderings, logos, page layouts, etc. Ensures that renderings are accurate for engineering and visual purposes.

B1: Inspects and reviews client and vendor supplied drawings as well as prototypes of products.

B2: Develops copy from scratch or from rough drafts.

B3: Seeks out new concepts and designs to ignite FCI sales.
