What is a full time commercial pilot?

Full time commercial pilots are professional aviators who are licensed to operate aircraft for compensation or hire, typically working for airlines, charter companies, or cargo carriers. They are responsible for safely piloting airplanes or helicopters, ensuring compliance with aviation regulations, and managing flight operations from pre-flight checks to post-flight procedures. Beyond flying, commercial pilots may also oversee flight planning, weather assessments, and crew coordination. This role generally requires rigorous training, a commercial pilot's license, and adherence to strict safety standards. Full time commercial pilots often have varying schedules, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full time commercial pilot?

To thrive as a Full Time Commercial Pilot, you need a solid understanding of aeronautical principles, flight operations, and navigation, typically supported by a commercial pilot license and relevant flight hours. Proficiency with advanced avionics, flight management systems, and simulator training is essential, along with certifications such as an instrument rating. Strong decision-making, situational awareness, and communication skills set pilots apart in managing complex and high-pressure situations. These competencies are vital for ensuring passenger safety, regulatory compliance, and efficient flight operations.

What are some common challenges full time commercial pilots face in maintaining work-life balance?

Full-time commercial pilots often experience irregular schedules, including overnight flights, weekends, and holidays, which can make it challenging to maintain a consistent work-life balance. Time zone changes and long periods away from home are common, requiring pilots to adapt and plan personal commitments in advance. Many airlines offer bidding systems for schedules based on seniority, so work-life balance may improve as pilots gain experience. Developing strong communication with family and prioritizing rest during layovers are key strategies for managing these challenges.

What is the difference between Full Time Commercial Pilot vs Part Time Commercial Pilot?

Can you become a full time commercial pilot with a full-time job?

Full-time commercial pilots often work irregular hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays, which can make holding a traditional full-time job challenging. Balancing a commercial pilot career with another full-time job depends on individual schedules, flight hours, and employer policies, but it generally requires significant flexibility and time management skills.

Job description

Fly it, and run it. Jaco Oil Company is looking for an experienced corporate pilot to operate and lead our small flight department - the autonomy of single-pilot command without the grind of an airline schedule. We fly roughly 150 hours a year, single-pilot, with real ownership over how the department runs.

Jaco Oil is an established management organization overseeing fuel distribution and retail food operations across several entities - a stable, well-run company that takes safety, efficiency, and professionalism seriously in everything we do.

The Aircraft:
King Air 200GT and Cessna T210, flown single-pilot under Part 91.
ย
  • Operate the King Air 200GT and Cessna T210 safely, efficiently, and in full compliance with the FARs and company policy
  • Oversee day-to-day flight department management: aircraft readiness, maintenance coordination, scheduling, and tracking
  • Coordinate directly with company leadership on travel plans and scheduling
  • Arrange ground transportation, fuel stops, and FBO/airport services for trips
  • Monitor weather and operational conditions to support safe go/no-go decisions
  • Conduct pre-flight inspections and routine checks; identify and flag mechanical issues
  • Maintain strong relationships with maintenance facilities, FBOs, and regulatory contacts
  • Handle regulatory compliance and general flight department administration
  • FAA Commercial Pilot Certificate with Multi-Engine, Instrument rating, and high-altitude endorsement - ATP highly preferred
  • Minimum hours: 3,000 TT 1,500 Multi-Engine 1,000 Turboprop 250 in King Air 200s
  • Proven single-pilot PIC experience in cross-country operations
  • Complete knowledge of FAA regulations and aviation safety practices
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail - able to manage documentation, maintenance coordination, and logistics
  • Clear, professional communication with leadership and aviation service providers

Jaco Oil offers a comprehensive benefits package to full-time employees working 30+ hours per week:
  • Company-paid Life and AD&D insurance - fully covered at no cost to you
  • Company-paid Dental (HMO) and Vision - new this year, Jaco Oil now covers the premium for enrolled employees
  • Medical coverage with shared premium costs
  • Flexible Spending Account (FSA) and Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
  • Voluntary options at competitive group rates via payroll deduction: optional life, plus supplemental Accident, Critical Illness, and Hospital Indemnity coverage
  • Dependent coverage for your spouse or domestic partner and children up to age 26

Coverage begins the first of the month following 30 days of employment.

If you're a sharp, safety-minded pilot who wants command of the airplane and the department, we'd like to hear from you. Apply today.
