Description
LAC Federal is seeking a full-time Chinese Cataloger to work on-site at a leading institution in the Washington, D.C. area. The Cataloger will contribute to a prestigious collection discoverability project by performing original and copy cataloging. The Cataloger will be responsible for creating high-quality bibliographic records in accordance with national and international standards, as well as local policies and quality requirements. This role plays a key part in reducing cataloging backlogs and making both English-language and Chinese-language materials discoverable to researchers and the public.
Responsibilities
  • Create original and copy bibliographic records according to RDA, DCRM, MARC 21, BIBCO/CONSER, LC/PCC Policy Statements, and NACO guidelines, including records for Chinese-language materials.
  • Perform authority work and ensure accurate representation of names, titles, and subjects in Chinese script and, where applicable, Romanized form.
  • Ensure consistency, accuracy, and quality control across all bibliographic and authority records.
  • Collaborate with other project staff to ensure records meet institutional, national, and international standards.
  • Contribute to efficient backlog reduction by processing un- or under-cataloged materials.

Requirements
  • Demonstrated experience cataloging library materials and creating authority records in accordance with national and international standards.
  • Proficiency with cataloging in Chinese including the ability to read and interpret bibliographic information.
  • Familiarity with subject-specific classification systems (e.g., LCC).
  • Experience using OCLC and Ex Libris Alma.
  • Knowledge of best practices for handling multilingual and non-Roman script metadata.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to sit for extended periods and maintain focus on detailed work involving computer screens and bibliographic data.
  • Occasional lifting of items weighing up to twenty-five (25) pounds, such as files, books, or other library materials.
