We are seeking an experienced, entrepreneurial General Manager to lead the growth and day-to-day operations of an established defense engineering and manufacturing company serving U.S. Government and defense-industry customers.

This is a highly visible leadership position for an individual who can operate comfortably across business development, finance, engineering, manufacturing, and customer relationships. The successful candidate will have the business judgment to identify opportunities, the technical understanding to work effectively with engineers and manufacturing personnel, and the financial discipline to manage profitable growth.


Key Responsibilities

Business Leadership

  • Provide overall leadership and direction for the company.
  • Develop and execute strategic growth plans.
  • Establish priorities, performance objectives, and accountability throughout the organization.
  • Identify new markets, customers, products, and strategic partnerships.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with defense contractors, government customers, and industry partners.

Business Development

  • Lead capture and business-development activities from opportunity identification through proposal and contract award.
  • Develop and maintain a strong sales pipeline.
  • Identify opportunities within the DoD and defense industrial base.
  • Develop customer relationships and represent the company at industry events and customer meetings.
  • Work closely with engineering and operations to develop competitive technical and commercial proposals.

Financial Management

  • Manage company financial performance, budgets, cash flow, and profitability.
  • Understand job costing, labor utilization, overhead, margins, and project profitability.
  • Work with accounting personnel and outside advisors to establish accurate financial reporting and forecasting.
  • Analyze financial and operational performance and take corrective action when necessary.
  • Participate in pricing, contract negotiations, capital planning, and major purchasing decisions.

 

 Engineering & Manufacturing

  • Work closely with engineering leadership to prioritize R&D and customer programs.
  • Understand engineering development, prototyping, testing, design-for-manufacturing, and production.
  • Oversee manufacturing operations to ensure quality, schedule, productivity, and cost objectives are achieved.
  • Promote continuous improvement in engineering and manufacturing processes.
  • Balance customer requirements, technical risk, schedule, and profitability.


Government & Defense Programs

  • Maintain an understanding of U.S. Government contracting requirements and the defense acquisition environment.
  • Ensure company operations support applicable contractual, quality, security, and regulatory requirements.
  • Develop strong working relationships with government and prime-contractor customers.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of progressive leadership experience in engineering, manufacturing, defense, aerospace, marine, composites, or a related technical industry.
  • Demonstrated experience managing business development and customer relationships.
  • Strong understanding of financial management, budgeting, forecasting, and profitability.
  • Ability to read and understand financial statements and use financial information to make business decisions.
  • Technical understanding sufficient to communicate effectively with engineers, manufacturing personnel, and customers.
  • Experience managing engineering and manufacturing teams.
  • Strong negotiating, communication, presentation, and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop new business and convert opportunities into profitable programs.
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Business, Finance, or a related field preferred; equivalent industry experience will be considered.
