Haugland Group, a privately owned Long Island, New York-based civil infrastructure and energy construction company, has an immediate opportunity for an MTBM Operator to join our team.
We are seeking an experienced, self-motivated, and highly organized individual to join our team as an MTBM (Microtunnel Boring Machine) Operator to support trenchless tunneling operations across the United States.
The MTBM Operator safely and efficiently operates remote-controlled microtunneling equipment to support the installation of underground pipelines while maintaining precise line and grade. This role involves managing MTBM systems, including guidance, slurry, and hydraulic jacking, and working closely with field crews and project teams to meet production, safety, and quality goals. The ideal candidate has experience with Herrenknecht or similar systems across a range of ground conditions.

Key Functions:- Operate and monitor MTBM systems to ensure safe, precise tunneling and maintain line and grade.
- Manage tunneling operations, including slurry, guidance, hydraulic jacking, and cutterhead performance.
- Coordinate with crews, survey, and project teams to meet production, safety, and quality goals.
- Troubleshoot mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and geotechnical issues during operations.
- Perform equipment inspections, assist with maintenance, and support system setup and commissioning.
- Maintain production logs and communicate progress, issues, and site conditions.
- Support mobilization, demobilization, and adhere to all safety and compliance standards.
- Support coordination with subcontractors, vendors, and field personnel as required
Desired Qualifications:- 5+ years of experience operating MTBM or similar trenchless tunneling equipment.
- Experience with Herrenknecht systems and VMT guidance preferred.
- Strong knowledge of slurry systems, pipe jacking, and tunneling operations.
- Ability to read plans, survey data, and machine instrumentation.
- Mechanical aptitude with troubleshooting experience across key systems.
- Familiarity with various ground conditions (rock, mixed, soft ground).
- OSHA certification preferred; valid driver's license required (CDL a plus).
- Strong communication, teamwork, and willingness to travel and work flexible schedule.
- Ability to work extended shifts, nights, weekends, and rotational schedules depending on project demands.
- Ability to travel for project assignments throughout the United States.
