As of Jun 22, 2026, the average yearly pay for full time altium designer in the United States is $100,705.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $75,500.00 and $120,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some common challenges Full Time Altium Designers face when working on complex PCB projects, and how can they overcome them?

Full Time Altium Designers often encounter challenges such as managing intricate multi-layer board layouts, ensuring signal integrity, and adhering to strict manufacturing constraints. Collaboration with electrical engineers and manufacturers is essential to address design-for-manufacturability issues early in the process. To overcome these challenges, it's helpful to stay up-to-date with Altium Designer's advanced features, maintain clear communication with cross-functional teams, and regularly review design guidelines to avoid costly revisions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Full Time Altium Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Time Altium Designer, you need expertise in PCB layout, schematic capture, electronic circuit design, and a degree in electrical or electronics engineering. Proficiency in Altium Designer software, and familiarity with related tools like SPICE simulation and PCB fabrication processes, are typically required. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating with engineering teams. These skills ensure accurate, manufacturable designs that meet project requirements and industry standards.

What is the difference between Full Time Altium Designer vs PCB Designer?

AspectFull Time Altium DesignerPCB Designer
CredentialsProficiency in Altium Designer software, often with certifications or trainingKnowledge of PCB design tools, may include certifications in PCB design
Work EnvironmentDesign teams, electronics manufacturing companies, engineering firmsElectronics companies, contract design firms, manufacturing environments
Industry UsageUsed across electronics, aerospace, automotive, and consumer device industriesPrimarily in electronics and hardware development sectors

Full Time Altium Designer roles focus on creating detailed PCB layouts using Altium software, often requiring specific software skills and certifications. PCB Designer positions also involve PCB layout work but may use various tools and have broader design responsibilities. Both roles are integral to electronics development but differ slightly in scope and tool specialization.

What is a Full Time Altium Designer?

A Full Time Altium Designer is a professional who specializes in using Altium Designer, a leading software suite for printed circuit board (PCB) design, as their primary job. They are responsible for creating and editing electronic schematics, laying out PCBs, and preparing design files for manufacturing. Working full time means they dedicate the majority of their working hours to these tasks, often collaborating with engineers and manufacturers to ensure efficient and reliable electronic product development. Their role is crucial for industries ranging from consumer electronics to aerospace, where high-quality PCB design is essential.

Job description

Lab37 Robotics is a technology company focused on the development and deployment of robots designed specifically for direct-to-customer food production. Our mission is to revolutionize the food industry by creating innovative robotic solutions that enhance efficiency, quality, and customer satisfaction. We are passionate about pushing the boundaries of technology to deliver cutting-edge products that meet the evolving needs of our clients.

Job Description:

Lab37 Robotics is seeking a PCBA Design Engineer to lead the design, layout, and release of high-reliability PCBAs used in our next-generation robotic food-production systems. This role requires strong hands-on expertise in Altium Designer, multi-layer PCB layout, and high-speed design practices, along with the ability to collaborate closely with mechanical, firmware, controls, and manufacturing teams to take designs from concept through production. You will own multiple boards across motor control, sensors, communications, and power distribution, from early concept through pilot builds and production.

Responsibilities:

Own end-to-end PCB/PCBA design in Altium: circuit design, schematic capture, component selection, stackup definition, design rules, layout, and manufacturing documentation and release packages.

Design multi-layer boards (4+ layers) including controlled impedance routing, high-speed interfaces, and mixed-signal layouts.

Apply best practices for SI/PI/EMI: return path continuity, decoupling strategy, power integrity, shielding, grounding, and noise reduction.

Incorporate regulatory compliance requirements into PCBA designs, including EMC/EMI, ESD, and electrical safety requirements applicable to commercial robotic systems.

Contribute to libraries (symbols, footprints, 3D models) while maintaining CAD standards to ensure consistent, scalable design practices.

Partner with firmware and controls teams to support board bring-up, debugging, validation testing, and design iteration based on real-world performance.

Collaborate with manufacturing partners on DFM/DFA/DFT, stackup drawings, panelization considerations, test strategy, and resolution of production issues.

Interface with external test labs during pre-compliance and formal regulatory testing (FCC, UL, etc.), and implement mitigations to address any observed failures.

Participate in design reviews and contribute to system-level architecture decisions for sensors, motor control, communications, compute, and power subsystems.

Qualifications:

5+ years of industry experience designing PCBAs for production hardware products.

Proficiency with Altium Designer (schematic, PCB layout, and release workflow).

Demonstrated experience with multi-layer boards and high-speed design practices (controlled impedance, differential pairs, length matching, via strategy, etc.).

Strong understanding of mixed-signal layout, grounding/return paths, decoupling, and EMI/EMC fundamentals.

Practical experience supporting board bring-up, debugging, and working cross-functionally to resolve electrical and system-level issues.

Experience with some or all of the following: microcontrollers, motor control hardware, CAN, Ethernet, and NFC/RFID.

Familiarity with manufacturing constraints and processes (DFM/DFA/DFT), and working with CM/fab/assembly vendors.

Experience designing hardware subject to regulatory requirements (FCC, CE, IEC/UL, or similar standards).

Comfortable operating in a fast-paced environment where priorities can shift and iteration speed matters.

Additional Information:

Our work environment is fast-paced and dynamic, fostering a culture of creativity, collaboration, and fulfilling work. We believe that a stimulating and enjoyable workplace is key to driving innovation and achieving excellence. At Lab37 Robotics, every team member plays a vital role in shaping the future of food production, and we are committed to supporting our employees' growth and success.

Pay and benefits: We are looking for best in class for both talent and work ethic and provide benefits and pay to match.
Join us at Lab37 Robotics and be a part of a forward-thinking company that's transforming the way the world approaches food production.
