What is the difference between Full Stack vs Front End Developer?

AspectFull Stack DeveloperFront End Developer
Skills & CertificationsProficiency in both front end and back end technologies, certifications in JavaScript, HTML, CSS, and server-side languagesSpecialized in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and front end frameworks like React or Angular
Work EnvironmentWorks on both client-side and server-side development, often involved in full project lifecycleFocuses on designing and implementing user interfaces and user experience
Industry UsageCommon in startups, small teams, and full project development rolesPrimarily in web development agencies, UI/UX teams, and front end-focused projects

Full Stack Developers have a broad skill set covering both front end and back end development, enabling them to handle entire projects. Front End Developers specialize in creating engaging user interfaces. The choice depends on project scope and team needs.

What is a full stack developer?

Full Stack developers are professionals who have the skills to work on both the front-end and back-end parts of web applications. This means they can handle the user interface, server-side logic, databases, and even deployment processes. They are versatile and can work with a variety of programming languages and frameworks, making them valuable assets to software development teams. Full Stack developers often collaborate closely with designers, other developers, and stakeholders to build and maintain complete, functional products.

How do full stack developers typically balance working on both front-end and back-end tasks within a project?

Full Stack Developers often split their time between front-end and back-end responsibilities based on the project's current needs. In agile or collaborative environments, they may focus on developing user interfaces one week and optimizing server-side logic or databases the next. Effective communication with team members—such as designers, product managers, and other developers—is key to prioritizing tasks and ensuring smooth handoffs between layers. This flexibility allows Full Stack Developers to gain a holistic view of the application and contribute to multiple stages of the development process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full stack developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Stack Developer, you need strong proficiency in both front-end and back-end programming languages (such as JavaScript, HTML/CSS, Python, or Java) and a solid understanding of web development principles. Familiarity with frameworks (like React, Angular, Node.js), databases (SQL/NoSQL), version control (Git), and knowledge of deployment tools or cloud services are typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, adaptability, and effective communication set exceptional Full Stack Developers apart. These skills are vital for efficiently building, deploying, and maintaining complete web applications while collaborating across technical and non-technical teams.

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Full Stack Engineer to help us build the future of AI brand perception intelligence.

Founded in 2023, Handraise is an AI-native narrative intelligence platform helping the world’s most visible companies understand, manage, and shape how they are perceived across media, markets, and AI systems. We work with some of the most influential brands in the world, and our investors include Silverton Partners, Floodgate, and Bill Wood Ventures. Our Founder previously founded TrendKite, the PR analytics company that helped define the modern media measurement category before being acquired by Cision for $225M.We’re a competitive, tight-knit team based in Austin, TX. We value autonomy, ownership, speed, and grit. We’re looking for people who thrive in ambiguity, care deeply about winning, and want to help build a generational company at the center of how brands understand and control their narratives in the age of AI.

DescriptionAbout the Role

Handraise is hiring a Senior Full Stack Engineer to build and scale the product experience used by communications leaders at some of the world’s largest brands.

You will work across the stack, from customer-facing product experiences to the APIs and services that power them. You’ll help turn complex media, narrative, and AI intelligence into fast, intuitive workflows that make difficult questions easy to answer.

This is not a narrow front-end or back-end role. You will work closely with Product, Design, Data, and company leadership to ship meaningful features, improve platform performance, and help define the technical foundation of a rapidly growing enterprise product.

If you can move quickly, make smart technical decisions, and thrive without a perfect playbook, this role is for you.

Your Impact
  • Build and ship customer-facing features across the Handraise platform
  • Develop scalable APIs, services, and application architecture
  • Turn complex data and AI outputs into clear, intuitive product experiences
  • Partner closely with Product and Design from concept through launch
  • Improve application performance, reliability, security, and maintainability
  • Integrate product experiences with Handraise’s data, search, and AI systems
  • Troubleshoot production issues and drive resolution across the stack
  • Help establish engineering standards, development processes, and technical best practices
  • Influence product direction through strong technical judgment and customer understanding
  • Mentor other engineers and raise the quality of the team
Your Skills
  • 5+ years of professional software engineering experience
  • Strong experience building and operating modern web applications in production
  • Experience with modern front-end frameworks and back-end application development
  • Strong understanding of APIs, databases, application architecture, and cloud infrastructure
  • Experience building data-intensive or enterprise SaaS products
  • You can move comfortably between front-end, back-end, and infrastructure concerns
  • You care deeply about product quality, usability, performance, and reliability
  • You can translate ambiguous product requirements into practical technical solutions
  • You are proactive and take ownership from idea through production
  • You are comfortable operating in an evolving product with imperfect processes
  • You communicate clearly and work well across technical and non-technical teams
Non-Negotiables
  • You understand that this is an early-stage startup and you will wear multiple hats
  • You do not have a “that is not my job” attitude
  • You are comfortable shipping quickly without sacrificing sound engineering judgment
  • You take responsibility for the quality and reliability of what you build
  • You are willing to investigate and resolve urgent production issues
  • You are curious and passionate about the use and impact of AI
  • You are not afraid of learning complex media intelligence, data, and LLM concepts
  • You care about solving real customer problems, not just writing code
Nice to Haves
  • Experience building AI or LLM-powered products
  • Experience with search, analytics, media intelligence, or data visualization platforms
  • Experience with Python
  • Experience with OpenSearch, Elasticsearch, or similar technologies
  • Experience with cloud infrastructure, containerization, and infrastructure as code
  • Experience supporting enterprise customers and security requirements
  • Early-stage startup experience
  • Experience serving as a technical lead or mentor
  • Competitive compensation with equity
  • Competitive health benefits, including medical, dental, vision, and life insurance
  • Opportunity to shape the product and engineering foundation from the ground floor
  • Direct influence over product strategy and company direction
  • High ownership, high autonomy, and meaningful technical challenges
  • The chance to build an AI-native platform used by the world’s most influential brands
