They are proficient in building complete web applications, handling everything from designing user interfaces and user experiences to managing databases and server-side logic. Typically, they work with frameworks like Spring Boot for the backend and technologies like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for the frontend, ensuring seamless integration between the two. Full Stack Java Developers are valued for their versatility and ability to manage all aspects of the software development process.

What is a full stack Java developer?

A full stack Java developer is a web developer that uses the Java language in the development of the entire technology stack of a web-based application. The job duties of a full stack Java developer are to create both front-end components, such as user interfaces and back-end components, such as application code and databases. As a full stack Java developer, you must understand how the entire technology stack functions as a whole and have deep expertise of each component. Java is a computer programming language that has become one of the most popular for web application development.

What are the typical challenges full stack Java developers face when working on cross-functional teams?

Full Stack Java Developers often collaborate with front-end designers, back-end engineers, and QA specialists, which can lead to challenges in aligning technical requirements, timelines, and coding standards. Navigating different priorities and communication styles is common, especially when integrating new features or resolving bugs that span both client and server sides. Success in this environment requires flexibility, proactive communication, and a willingness to quickly adapt to shifting project needs or technologies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full stack Java developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Stack Java Developer, you need strong proficiency in Java, front-end frameworks (such as Angular or React), back-end technologies, and a solid understanding of databases, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. These skills and qualities are essential to deliver robust, user-friendly applications and to collaborate efficiently across the software development lifecycle.

Job description

Position: Senior Full-Stack Java Engineer (AI-Augmented)
Work Location: McLean, VA
Duration: Contract

Job Description:
This is a heavy backend/database-focused position (roughly a 75/25 split) with a cutting-edge twist: the client wants engineers who actively use AI coding assistants to accelerate their development lifecycle.
AI-Assisted Development (Must-Have): Candidates must actively use tools like Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, or Amazon Q within their IDE to write, debug, and automate unit testing. Filter out traditionalists who refuse to use AI tools.
Backend Mastery: Deep enterprise experience with Java 8+, Spring Boot, Spring Security, and Hibernate/JPA.
Database Heavyweight: High proficiency in RDBMS (PostgreSQL or MS SQL). They must know how to perform advanced SQL query optimization, look at execution plans, and tune performance.
Data Streaming: Hands-on experience with Apache Kafka for messaging and streaming.
Frontend & Infrastructure: Angular (v9 or above), HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, and jQuery, paired with an understanding of Docker and AWS EKS for deployment.
