What is a full stack engineer?

Full Stack Engineers are developers skilled in both front-end and back-end technologies, allowing them to build complete web applications from start to finish. They work with databases, servers, APIs, and user interfaces, handling everything from designing user experiences to managing server infrastructure. Their versatility makes them valuable team members, as they can understand and contribute to all parts of a project. Full Stack Engineers typically have experience with programming languages and frameworks such as JavaScript, Python, Node.js, React, and SQL.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full stack engineer?

To thrive as a Full Stack Engineer, you need a strong grasp of both front-end and back-end development, proficiency in languages such as JavaScript, Python, or Java, and typically a bachelor's degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with frameworks like React or Angular for the front end, Node.js or Django for the back end, and experience with databases, version control (Git), and cloud platforms are essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and adaptability help you collaborate across teams and manage project requirements. These skills are crucial for building robust, scalable applications and ensuring seamless integration between client and server components.

What are some common challenges full stack engineers face when balancing front-end and back-end tasks?

Full Stack Engineers often juggle multiple responsibilities, switching between client-side and server-side development. One challenge is staying updated with rapidly evolving technologies on both ends, which can require continuous learning. It’s also common to face time management difficulties, especially when coordinating with both UX/UI designers and back-end teams to ensure smooth integration. Effective communication and prioritization skills are essential to manage these demands and deliver cohesive, high-quality solutions.

We're looking for a technical leader who leads by example and remains deeply involved in engineering execution.
In this role, you'll oversee full-stack development across two health plan technology environments, including Microsoft-based applications, Azure cloud services, Dynamics 365, and modern DevOps platforms. You'll drive modernization efforts, improve reliability and security, reduce technical debt, and help prepare systems for future enterprise migration. Success in this role requires a builder's mindset, strong ownership, and a commitment to leveraging AI-assisted development tools to accelerate delivery, improve quality, and elevate team performance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and develop a team of software engineers through coaching, mentoring, performance management, and career development.

  • Design, build, enhance, and modernize applications, APIs, integrations, and services across multiple technology platforms.

  • Remain highly engaged in hands-on software engineering activities, including coding, architecture, debugging, testing, and code reviews.

  • Establish engineering best practices and maintain high standards for software quality, security, and performance.

  • Drive modernization initiatives, cloud adoption, technical debt reduction, and platform optimization efforts.

  • Partner with architects, product owners, business stakeholders, and peer engineering leaders to define technical solutions and delivery priorities.

  • Implement and promote DevSecOps, CI/CD, automation, monitoring, and operational excellence practices.

  • Champion responsible and effective use of AI-assisted development tools to improve engineering productivity and software quality.

  • Support technology strategies that prepare legacy systems for future migration to enterprise platforms.

  • Ensure solutions meet security, compliance, privacy, and healthcare regulatory requirements.

  • Hands-on expertise with Microsoft technologies, including:
    • .NET / C#
    • SQL Server
    • RESTful APIs and integrations
    • Modern software design and architecture practices
  • Experience developing and deploying solutions in Microsoft Azure.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines, source control, automated testing, and DevOps practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to modernize legacy applications and improve operational reliability.
  • Experience performing code reviews and establishing engineering best practices.
  • Strong analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to operate effectively in a highly collaborative, cross-functional environment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS).
