What is a full stack engineer?

A Full Stack Engineer is a software developer who is skilled in both front-end and back-end development. They are capable of designing, building, and maintaining the entire technology stack of a web application, including user interfaces, servers, databases, and APIs. Full Stack Engineers often work with multiple programming languages and frameworks, allowing them to handle a wide variety of technical tasks. Their versatility makes them valuable team members in many tech projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full stack engineer?

To thrive as a Full Stack Engineer, you need proficiency in both front-end and back-end programming languages (such as JavaScript, HTML/CSS, Python, or Java), along with a solid understanding of web application architecture and databases. Familiarity with frameworks like React, Angular, Node.js, and tools such as Git, Docker, and CI/CD systems, as well as relevant certifications, are often required. Job description

At Backcountry, our mission is to connect people to their passions. Our four online stores-Backcountry, Competitive Cyclist, MotoSport and, SteepandCheap-aim to supply our customers with the gear, knowledge, and inspiration necessary to get out there and chase down life's greatest moments. We do this by providing the biggest and best assortment of premium outdoor products, superior shopping experience, personalized Gearhead expertise, lightning-fast and accurate fulfillment, and inspirational, informative, and community-centered content.
Adventure is our Culture. Join a team that celebrates a lifestyle as bold as the terrain we love. At Backcountry, we are rooted in adventure, recognition, and wellbeing on and off the mountain. We spotlight employee stories, celebrate milestones, and offer exclusive outdoor perks. Whether you are at HQ, in a retail store, or remote, you will be part of a team that thrives on energy, exploration, and connection.
  1. Reports to: Sr. HR Manager
  2. Location: Christiansburg, VA, On-Site 100%, No Remote Options

About the Role
You will serve as the on-site HR presence for Backcountry's Virginia Fulfillment Center, owning the full people function for a high-volume hourly workforce where your decisions directly shape culture, retention, and operational performance. Your scope spans every touchpoint of the employee lifecycle, and your impact is felt on the floor every day.
At 6-12 months, success looks like measurable improvement in turnover, a supervisory team that is meaningfully stronger in their people management capability, and ER matters handled with consistency, speed, and zero compliance exposure. Leaders trust you, employees know you, and HR is seen as a driver of results and not a back-office function.
This is a lean team. You will own a lot, move fast, and make decisions with full end-to-end responsibility.
What you get to do every day:
Operational HR Partnership
  • Serve as a key HR partner to FC leaders on day-to-day people operations.
  • Participate in decision-making discussions that impact staffing, retention, and culture.
  • Help create accountability through shared ownership of people metrics and leadership cross-training.

Talent Acquisition & Onboarding
  • Lead local onboarding efforts, ensuring a welcoming and consistent new hire experience.

Employee Experience & Retention
  • Champion the full employee lifecycle-from onboarding to development milestones and recognition.
  • Identify trends from exit interviews and employee feedback, and use insights to improve retention and engagement.
  • Collaborate with the team to set and track clear retention goals.

Training & Development
  • Design and deliver supervisor training and development programs.
  • Help upskill leaders through instructor-led sessions and on-the-job support.

HR Operations & Compliance
  • Maintain accurate employee records and compliance documentation.
  • Partner with Safety and Operations teams to support OSHA initiatives and maintain a culture of safety.
  • Assist in employee relations matters, conduct investigations, and recommend appropriate next steps.
  • Support DEI and engagement initiatives at the local level.

Data & Reporting
  • Create and share monthly HR metrics with site leadership, contributing to broader reporting consistency across locations.
  • Track progress on key indicators including turnover, hiring performance, engagement scores, and compliance.

What you bring to the role:
  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business, or related field.
  • 2-4 years of experience in an HR Generalist or related role-ideally in a fulfillment, logistics, or manufacturing setting.
  • Strong working knowledge of employment law and HR fundamentals.
  • Comfortable supporting both hourly and salaried employees in a high-paced, frontline environment.
  • Proactive communicator who builds trust and influences across all levels.
  • Demonstrated success with recruiting, onboarding, employee relations, and retention.
  • Experience with HRIS systems and strong proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Bonus: Familiarity with OSHA or safety regulations in an operational setting.

What's in it for you? Joining Backcountry isn't just about having a seat at the table-it's about helping redesign the table entirely. You'll be challenged, stretched, and supported as you grow faster than you thought possible. In addition to competitive compensation, we offer:
  • Executive Access: Work directly with brand CEOs and senior leadership, solving real business problems and earning mentorship from top operators.
  • AI-First Skill Building: Get hands-on with the most advanced AI tools in the market. From automation to prompt engineering, you'll build a modern tech stack that sets you apart in any industry.
  • Accelerated Career Path: High performers are quickly entrusted with greater responsibility, new challenges, and leadership opportunities across our portfolio of brands.
  • Competitive benefits: Paid time off policies, 401(k)/RRSP match, medical/dental/vision and a variety of supplemental policies, and employee discounts at our portfolio companies
