What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Full Stack Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Stack Engineer, you need proficiency in both front-end and back-end programming languages (such as JavaScript, HTML/CSS, Python, or Java), along with a solid understanding of web application architecture and databases. Familiarity with frameworks like React, Angular, Node.js, and tools such as Git, Docker, and CI/CD systems, as well as relevant certifications, are often required. Strong problem-solving skills, effective communication, and adaptability help you collaborate across teams and manage complex projects. These skills are crucial for building, deploying, and maintaining robust, scalable applications that meet business needs.

How do Full Stack Engineers typically collaborate with UX/UI designers and backend specialists on a project?

Full Stack Engineers frequently act as a bridge between UX/UI designers and backend specialists, ensuring seamless integration of front-end interfaces with server-side logic. They participate in cross-functional meetings, translate design requirements into functional features, and address technical feasibility from both ends. This collaboration often involves code reviews, regular communication to clarify requirements, and agile workflows to ensure that user experience and system performance are both prioritized throughout the development process.

Is Fullstack still worth it?

Full Stack Engineers remain in high demand due to their ability to work on both frontend and backend development, often requiring knowledge of frameworks like React or Node.js. The role offers versatility, competitive salaries, and opportunities across various industries, making it a valuable career choice for those with strong coding skills and adaptability.

What is the difference between Full Stack Engineer vs Front End Developer?

AspectFull Stack EngineerFront End Developer
Required SkillsProficiency in both front-end and back-end technologies, including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, server-side languages, and databases.Specializes in client-side technologies like HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and frameworks such as React or Angular.
Work EnvironmentWorks on both server and client-side development, often handling entire project stacks.Focuses primarily on creating and optimizing user interfaces and user experience.
Common UsageUsed in full project development, especially in startups and small teams requiring versatile developers.Primarily employed in UI/UX design, front-end frameworks, and client-side optimization.

While both roles require strong web development skills, a Full Stack Engineer handles both front-end and back-end tasks, providing a comprehensive approach to web development. A Front End Developer specializes in creating engaging and responsive user interfaces, focusing on the client side of applications.

What is a Full Stack Engineer?

A Full Stack Engineer is a software developer who is skilled in both front-end and back-end development. They are capable of designing, building, and maintaining the entire technology stack of a web application, including user interfaces, servers, databases, and APIs. Full Stack Engineers often work with multiple programming languages and frameworks, allowing them to handle a wide variety of technical tasks. Their versatility makes them valuable team members in many tech projects.

Will AI replace full-stack dev?

Full-stack engineers design and develop both front-end and back-end components of applications, and AI tools can automate certain coding tasks. However, AI is more likely to augment their work by handling repetitive tasks, while human oversight, problem-solving, and creativity remain essential for complex development and system architecture. Continuous learning and adapting to new tools are important for full-stack developers to stay relevant.

What does a full-stack engineer do?

A full-stack engineer designs, develops, and maintains both the front-end and back-end components of web applications. They work with programming languages like JavaScript, Python, or Java, and use tools such as frameworks and databases to create complete software solutions. Full-stack engineers often collaborate across teams and may hold certifications or have experience with cloud services and version control systems.

What is a full-stack salary?

A full-stack engineer's salary varies based on experience, location, and company size, but typically ranges from $70,000 to over $120,000 annually in many regions. Factors such as proficiency in both front-end and back-end technologies, familiarity with frameworks, and certifications can influence compensation levels.

Job Summary

Vertiv is seeking a skilled and self-directed Full Stack Developer (React) to own the design, development, and ongoing maintenance of Site Scope, an internal web application built on a modern React within the Digital organization. Site Scope serves as a centralized operational tool that surfaces data, workflows, and intelligence for internal Vertiv stakeholders, and this role is the primary engineer responsible for the platform. The Full Stack Developer will build and maintain both the React frontend and supporting backend services and APIs using Node.js, deploying and operating the application in AWS cloud environments. This position plays a direct role in advancing Vertiv's Operational Excellence strategic priority by ensuring Site Scope remains a performant, maintainable, and high-quality platform that digital teams and business users can rely on.

As an individual contributor, this role extends across the full application lifecycle - from feature development and UX refinement to CI/CD pipeline ownership, test automation, and production monitoring. This role will also drive the integration of AI and GenAI capabilities into Site Scope, including connecting LLM APIs and embedding intelligent features that increase the application's value to its users. The Full Stack Developer partners closely with technology and business stakeholders to translate requirements into high-quality, scalable engineering solutions, and actively contributes to Vertiv's Customer Focus & Innovation priorities by delivering a tool that is intuitive, fast, and continuously improving.

This position will be based onsite at Vertiv's Westerville, OH - HQ office location.

Responsibilities:

  • SiteScope Application Development & Maintenance: Own end-to-end development and maintenance of the Site Scope web application, including the frontend, component library, and backend APIs and services; ensure the application is performant, accessible, and production-ready at all times.
  • CI/CD Pipeline Ownership: Design, implement, and maintain CI/CD pipelines for Site Scope using GitLab; automate build, test, and deployment workflows to support rapid, reliable delivery cycles with consistent quality gates.
  • Test Automation: Support a comprehensive test automation suite for Site Scope covering unit, integration, and end-to-end test layers; embed automated testing into the CI/CD pipeline and own test coverage standards for the application.
  • UX Improvements & Design Iteration: Continuously evaluate and improve the Site Scope user experience through user-centered design principles, accessibility best practices, and iterative UI/UX enhancements; partner with stakeholders to gather feedback and translate it into intuitive, high-quality interface improvements.
  • AI Feature Integration: Lead the integration of AI and GenAI capabilities into Site Scope, including connecting approved LLM APIs, implementing prompt-driven features, and embedding intelligent workflows that increase application value; collaborate with the AI/ML Platform Engineer and Digital team to align on AI governance and standards.
  • Code Quality & Engineering Standards: Uphold high engineering standards across the Site Scope codebase through rigorous code reviews, refactoring, documentation, and adherence to Vertiv's software development and security best practices; champion clean, maintainable, and well-tested code.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Serve as the primary technical point of contact; translate business requirements into technical solutions, and communicate application status, roadmap, and risks clearly to non-technical audiences.
  • Monitoring, Observability & Production Support: Implement and maintain monitoring, logging, and observability tooling; proactively respond to alerts, diagnose production issues, and drive resolution to ensure high availability and reliability of the application for its user base.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field; equivalent practical experience considered.
  • 4+ years of professional full stack software development experience.
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience building and maintaining React applications in a production environment.
  • Demonstrated experience owning or contributing to CI/CD pipelines and test automation frameworks.
  • Experience developing internal tooling, enterprise web applications, or operational dashboards preferred.

Technical Skills

  • Frontend: React, TypeScript, JavaScript, CSS/component libraries (e.g., Material UI, Ant Design, or equivalent).
  • Backend & APIs: Node.js or equivalent backend runtime; REST API design and integration.
  • CI/CD & DevOps: GitLab, Jenkins, GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps, or equivalent; experience with automated build, test, and deployment pipelines.
  • Test Automation: Jest, Playwright, Cypress, or equivalent frameworks; unit, integration, and end-to-end testing experience.
  • Cloud: AWS or equivalent cloud platform; experience with deployment, containerization (Docker), and basic infrastructure concepts.
  • AI Integration: Basic experience integrating LLM APIs (OpenAI, Azure OpenAI, or equivalent) into web application features.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience integrating GenAI or LLM-based features into production web applications.
  • Strong UX and accessibility design sensibility; familiarity with WCAG standards.
  • Familiarity with Snowflake or enterprise data sources as backends for internal tooling.
  • Experience with observability and monitoring tools (e.g., Datadog, CloudWatch, Grafana, or equivalent).
