What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Full Stack Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Stack Engineer, you need proficiency in both front-end and back-end programming languages (such as JavaScript, HTML/CSS, Python, or Java), along with a solid understanding of web application architecture and databases. Familiarity with frameworks like React, Angular, Node.js, and tools such as Git, Docker, and CI/CD systems, as well as relevant certifications, are often required. Strong problem-solving skills, effective communication, and adaptability help you collaborate across teams and manage complex projects. These skills are crucial for building, deploying, and maintaining robust, scalable applications that meet business needs.

How do Full Stack Engineers typically collaborate with UX/UI designers and backend specialists on a project?

Full Stack Engineers frequently act as a bridge between UX/UI designers and backend specialists, ensuring seamless integration of front-end interfaces with server-side logic. They participate in cross-functional meetings, translate design requirements into functional features, and address technical feasibility from both ends. This collaboration often involves code reviews, regular communication to clarify requirements, and agile workflows to ensure that user experience and system performance are both prioritized throughout the development process.

What is the difference between Full Stack Engineer vs Front End Developer?

AspectFull Stack EngineerFront End Developer
Required SkillsProficiency in both front-end and back-end technologies, including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, server-side languages, and databases.Specializes in client-side technologies like HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and frameworks such as React or Angular.
Work EnvironmentWorks on both server and client-side development, often handling entire project stacks.Focuses primarily on creating and optimizing user interfaces and user experience.

We empower small business owners, childcare providers, to launch and grow programs through software, coaching, and support, while partnering with governments to modernize childcare infrastructure.
We are building a category-defining platform at the intersection of marketplace, SaaS, and public sector systems, now increasingly powered by AI. Our products help providers run and grow their businesses, from enrollment and marketing to licensing, compliance, and daily operations.
Our team is small, fast-moving, and deeply focused on building systems that scale. We value people who take ownership, experiment quickly, and use modern tools, including AI and automation, to increase their leverage and impact.
Position Summary
This role builds the core systems that power Wonderschool's platform, enabling providers to launch and grow their businesses, governments to operate programs at scale, and families to access care. As a Senior Full Stack Engineer, you will own features end-to-end, working across frontend, backend, and data layers to deliver high-quality, scalable products.
You will operate as a builder, partnering closely with product, design, and go-to-market teams to turn real-world problems into simple, effective solutions. Success in this role means shipping quickly, improving system reliability, and leveraging modern tools, including AI, to increase development velocity and product impact.
Responsibilities
Build and Own Product End-to-End
  • Design, build, and ship full-stack features that improve provider, parent, and government experiences
  • Own the full development lifecycle, from scoping and architecture to implementation and production support
  • Write high-quality, maintainable code with strong test coverage
  • Debug and resolve production issues across the stack
Drive Product Impact
  • Partner closely with Product, Design, and Data to build features that solve real customer problems
  • Develop a deep understanding of customer workflows and use cases
  • Contribute to product decisions through technical insight and tradeoff analysis
  • Work closely with GTM teams to understand user needs and improve product outcomes
Improve Systems and Scale
  • Design systems and data models that support complex workflows and integrations
  • Improve performance, scalability, and reliability of the platform
  • Contribute to architecture decisions and technical direction
  • Help evolve engineering standards, tooling, and best practices
Increase Engineering Leverage
  • Use AI tools, automation, and modern development workflows to increase speed and efficiency
  • Identify opportunities to reduce manual work and improve developer productivity
  • Contribute to a culture of rapid iteration and continuous improvement
Required Qualifications
  • 6+ years of experience as a full stack engineer
  • Strong experience with modern frontend technologies (React, TypeScript, JavaScript)
  • Proficiency with backend systems (Node.js, Ruby on Rails, Elixir, or similar)
  • Experience working with relational databases (Postgres or similar)
  • Proven ability to deliver high-quality code with strong testing practices
  • Experience building and shipping production systems end-to-end
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience building complex or enterprise-grade systems with multiple integrations
  • Experience designing APIs (REST or GraphQL)
  • Familiarity with cloud infrastructure, containerization, or serverless architectures
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices
  • Experience working in fast-paced, high-growth environments
  • Experience incorporating AI into products or development workflows
Compensation & Benefits
Compensation Range (California):
The base salary range for this role is $180,000 - $220,000, depending on experience, skills, and location. This role may also be eligible for equity and other forms of compensation.

  • Health benefits with up to 100% coverage for employee premiums and up to 80% for dependents
  • Wifi and employee wellness stipends
  • Flexible PTO, paid holidays, and mental wellness days
  • Competitive parental leave (eligible after 6 months of employment)
  • A highly collaborative, mission-driven workplace environment
