What is a full stack engineer?

A Full Stack Engineer is a software developer who is skilled in both front-end and back-end development. They are capable of designing, building, and maintaining the entire technology stack of a web application, including user interfaces, servers, databases, and APIs. Full Stack Engineers often work with multiple programming languages and frameworks, allowing them to handle a wide variety of technical tasks. Their versatility makes them valuable team members in many tech projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full stack engineer?

To thrive as a Full Stack Engineer, you need proficiency in both front-end and back-end programming languages (such as JavaScript, HTML/CSS, Python, or Java), along with a solid understanding of web application architecture and databases. Familiarity with frameworks like React, Angular, Node.js, and tools such as Git, Docker, and CI/CD systems, as well as relevant certifications, are often required. Strong problem-solving skills, effective communication, and adaptability help you collaborate across teams and manage complex projects. These skills are crucial for building, deploying, and maintaining robust, scalable applications that meet business needs.

How do full stack engineers typically collaborate with UX/UI designers and backend specialists on a project?

Full Stack Engineers frequently act as a bridge between UX/UI designers and backend specialists, ensuring seamless integration of front-end interfaces with server-side logic. They participate in cross-functional meetings, translate design requirements into functional features, and address technical feasibility from both ends. This collaboration often involves code reviews, regular communication to clarify requirements, and agile workflows to ensure that user experience and system performance are both prioritized throughout the development process.

What is the difference between Full Stack Engineer vs Front End Developer?

AspectFull Stack EngineerFront End Developer
Required SkillsProficiency in both front-end and back-end technologies, including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, server-side languages, and databases.Specializes in client-side technologies like HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and frameworks such as React or Angular.
Work EnvironmentWorks on both server and client-side development, often handling entire project stacks.Focuses primarily on creating and optimizing user interfaces and user experience.
Common UsageUsed in full project development, especially in startups and small teams requiring versatile developers.Primarily employed in UI/UX design, front-end frameworks, and client-side optimization.

While both roles require strong web development skills, a Full Stack Engineer handles both front-end and back-end tasks, providing a comprehensive approach to web development. A Front End Developer specializes in creating engaging and responsive user interfaces, focusing on the client side of applications.

Can I learn a full stack engineer in 3 months?

Becoming a full stack engineer in three months is challenging but possible with intensive study, focusing on core skills like HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and backend frameworks. Success depends on prior experience, learning pace, and dedication, often requiring full-time commitment and practical projects to build proficiency.

Job description

About the Role

This is a full-stack engineering role with a backend lean at an early-stage AI infrastructure company building the continuous improvement layer for production AI agents. You'll work directly at the intersection of developer tooling, observability, and applied AI — helping engineering teams understand, debug, and improve their agents in production. The work is hands-on and high-ownership from day one.

What You'll Do
  • Build core product experiences including agent investigation interfaces, eval workflows, trajectory debugging, verification, and replay systems.

  • Own problems end-to-end — talk to customers, understand where their agents fail, define solutions, build them, and iterate until they work.

  • Ship across the full stack with a backend emphasis: APIs, data models, internal systems, and product surfaces.

  • Build and shape an AI-powered investigation agent that runs large-scale analyses across production traces.

  • Design and implement platform systems including workspaces, permissions, billing, usage tracking, SDKs, and terminal-first developer experiences.

  • Work directly with AI teams deploying production agents to understand their failures and translate them into product decisions.

What We're Looking For
  • 0–5 years of full-stack development experience with a strong track record of shipping production software end-to-end.

  • Proficiency in TypeScript, React, Next.js, Python, Node.js, and PostgreSQL in production environments.

  • Backend-focused skill set including strong API design and data modeling — not pure infrastructure or distributed systems.

  • Ability to engage directly with customers, identify pain points, and own solutions through to delivery.

  • Experience building platform systems such as workspaces, permissions, billing, usage tracking, SDKs, or account management.

  • Consistently clean, production-quality code and comfort working in fast-paced, ambiguous startup environments.

  • Bonus: experience with AI agents, LLM-powered products, developer tooling, observability products, or agentic system evaluation and debugging.

  • Strong CS fundamentals, whether from a top academic program or demonstrated through career experience at well-regarded tech companies or Series B+ startups.

Compensation & Benefits
  • Salary: $150,000 – $275,000 annually

  • Visa sponsorship: Not available

Location

On-site in San Francisco, California, United States. This is a full-time, in-office role.
