What is the difference between Full Stack Developer vs Front End Developer?

AspectFull Stack DeveloperFront End Developer
SkillsProficient in both front-end and back-end technologies, including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, server-side languages, and databases.Specializes in client-side technologies like HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and frameworks such as React or Angular.
Work EnvironmentWorks on both server and client-side development, often handling entire project stacks.Focuses primarily on designing and implementing user interfaces and user experience.
Common UsageUsed in full project development, especially in startups and small teams.Primarily involved in UI/UX design and front-end implementation in larger teams.

While both roles require strong web development skills, Full Stack Developers handle both front-end and back-end tasks, providing a comprehensive approach to web projects. Front End Developers focus solely on creating engaging and responsive user interfaces. Understanding these differences helps employers and developers choose the right role for their project needs.

What are some common challenges Full Stack Developers face when working on cross-functional teams?

Full Stack Developers often collaborate with designers, backend engineers, project managers, and QA testers, which can introduce challenges like aligning on project requirements and managing different technical perspectives. Coordinating between frontend and backend tasks while ensuring seamless integration is another common hurdle. Additionally, staying up-to-date with evolving technologies on both ends of the stack requires strong time management and continuous learning. Effective communication and adaptability are key to overcoming these challenges and delivering cohesive solutions.

What Does a Full Stack Developer Do?

As a full stack developer, your job is to work on the front-end and the back-end of a company's database, server, and application systems. Rather than specializing in one particular area, full stack developers typically focus on prototyping software that other employees expand on later. Knowledge of many different types of systems can reduce the time needed to develop software and highlight any significant challenges. In this role, you may be asked to gain proficiency in several coding languages, use third-party data libraries, and carefully manage your time to ensure all projects finish promptly. Most full stack developers work as part of a larger team.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Full Stack Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Stack Developer, you need expertise in both front-end and back-end programming languages (such as JavaScript, HTML/CSS, Python, or Java) and a solid understanding of web development principles, often supported by a relevant degree or coding bootcamp experience. Familiarity with frameworks like React or Angular, back-end environments like Node.js or Django, version control systems like Git, and possibly cloud platforms is typically required. Strong problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills distinguish excellent developers, allowing them to work effectively in team environments and with stakeholders. These technical and soft skills are vital for building, maintaining, and optimizing complex, user-friendly web applications that meet business needs.

What is a Full Stack Developer?

A Full Stack Developer is a software professional who is skilled in both front-end (client side) and back-end (server side) development. They are capable of designing, building, and maintaining complete web applications or systems, handling everything from user interfaces and databases to server logic and APIs. Full Stack Developers often work with a range of programming languages and frameworks, such as JavaScript, HTML/CSS, Node.js, Python, and SQL, among others. Their versatility allows them to contribute to multiple stages of the software development lifecycle, making them valuable assets to development teams.

Staff Full Stack Engineer

Type: Permanent | Full-Time

About Solink

At Solink, our mission is to safeguard what matters most. We provide businesses with the tools to know sooner and act faster by transforming video security into real-time operational insights.

Our cloud-based platform integrates seamlessly with your existing cameras and systems, turning them into intelligent sensors that detect and interpret key moments. This empowers teams to make data-driven decisions, enhance security, and improve operational efficiency.

Trusted by over 30,000 locations across 32+ countries - including brands like McDonald’s and JYSK - Solink delivers clarity when it counts. Our solutions help businesses reduce shrink, optimize performance, and respond proactively to potential threats.

We're growing rapidly, earning industry recognition, and scaling with purpose. We’ve been recognized by Deloitte’s Fast 50™ and Fast 500™, Business Intelligence Group, and as one of Ottawa’s Best Places to Work. And we’re just getting started!

The Role

On a small, high-velocity Agents team with outsized impact, this role is for a Staff Full Stack Engineer who wants to define how AI agents operate in product at scale

You provide technical leadership for the systems that allow Solink’s AI Agents to reason, act, and deliver value inside our cloud VMS platform. This includes backend services (TypeScript/Node), agent orchestration frameworks, APIs, tool integrations, and user-facing workflows that transform AI into reliable, measurable customer outcomes.

This is not a feature-factory role. You will work with other Staff and Senior engineers to help define and evolve the execution platform of our agent systems — tool use, workflow coordination, safety boundaries, latency management, and production reliability.

This is a high-ownership role. You are expected to identify opportunities, drive initiatives from concept to production, make sound technical decisions amid ambiguity, and mentor other engineers while collaborating closely with product, data, platform, and leadership teams.

You will have direct access to the latest AI models and tooling, with the autonomy to evaluate emerging technologies and apply them pragmatically where they create measurable product impact.

What You’ll Do

  • Aide in the definition and evolution of the architecture for Solink's agent platform and orchestration systems

  • Design and implement production-grade agent services in TypeScript/Node

  • Design scalable APIs and platform capabilities that enable teams across the organization to build on agent infrastructure

  • Establish patterns and frameworks for integrating LLM/VLM systems with internal tools, permissions, and data sources

  • Establish and enforce safety, guardrails, and failure handling in agent execution paths

  • Optimize latency, reliability, and scalability of agent-facing services in AWS/EKS

  • Drive observability strategy including tracing, debugging, performance analysis and operational metrics

  • Mentor engineers, raise engineering standards, and partner with Staff team members to influence technical direction across teams

  • Operate in tight feedback loops, shipping working code and validating ideas quickly

What You Bring

Must-Have:

  • Extensive experience building and operating production systems with TypeScript and Node.js

  • Experience integrating LLMs / VLMs into production workflows

  • Deep experience designing distributed systems with strong understanding of reliability, scalability, fault tolerance, and operational excellence

  • Experience architecting and operating cloud-native systems in AWS (EKS preferred)

  • Experience instrumenting systems for observability and debugging (OpenTelemetry or similar)

  • Track record of influencing architecture, engineering practices, and technical direction beyond a single team

  • Ability to navigate ambiguity, make pragmatic tradeoffs, and drive execution from concept through production

  • Experience mentoring senior engineers

Nice-to-Have:

  • Experience designing or leading development of AI agent platforms, orchestration frameworks, or tool-use systems

  • Experience implementing AI safety controls, governance, and guardrails around model execution

  • Experience designing event-driven, workflow-based, or distributed orchestration architectures

  • Experience working in a small, high-velocity startup or AI-first environment

Security Requirements
  • Candidates must undergo a criminal records check upon hire;

  • Be a Canadian Citizen (dual citizens included), or eligible to work in Canada;

  • Be willing to comply with Solink’s own security policies and standards.

  • Mandatory Onboarding visit in Ottawa/ Toronto during first week of employment

  • Mandatory onsite visits periodically (quarterly basis)
