Balancing front-end and back-end tasks within tight deadlines can be demanding, especially when project requirements change or are not clearly defined. Additionally, frequent communication with both technical and non-technical stakeholders is essential to ensure alignment and successful project delivery. Staying organized and proactive in managing your workload will help you handle these challenges effectively.

Job description

About us

At National Grid, we keep people connected and society moving. But it's so much more than that. National Grid supplies us with the environment to make it happen. As we generate momentum in the energy transition for all, we don't plan on leaving any of our customers in the dark. So, join us as a Principal Security Architect, and find your superpower.

We want to find an innovative, adaptable, and results-oriented Principal Security Architect for our Business Cybersecurity team.ย This position can be located in Syracuse, NY, Brooklyn, NY, Waltham, MA or Hicksville, NY (candidates may also reside in either Connecticut, New Jersey, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, or Maine).ย If you yearn to be innovative, contribute new ideas, and play a critical part in our IT&D organization, we want to hear from you!

About the role

As Principal Security Architect, you'll be a senior technical leader responsible for shaping and delivering secure-by-design solutions that align with business objectives and risk appetite. In this role, you will tackle the most complex security challenges, directly shape Grid's security policies and strategy, and define best practices.

You'll be the critical bridge between business stakeholders, engineering teams, and security services - ensuring solutions comply with regulatory and security requirements. Success is achieved by you delivering deep, hands-on security expertise, mature and professional communication skills, the ability and willingness to mentor and elevate the broader security and engineering teams, and a practical approach to real-world risk reduction.

What you'll do

Security Architecture and Strategy

  • Define and embed security controls across the full technology stack (network, application, database, operating systems, and cloud platforms)
  • Establish and promote secure-by-design principles, patterns, and reference architectures across the organization
  • Drive integration of modern and emerging technologies into secure enterprise solutions

Risk Management & Governance

  • Identify, assess, and communicate security risks, ensuring alignment with organizational risk appetite
  • Ensure risks are documented, owned, and managed through remediation or formal acceptance processes

Technical Security Leadership

  • Provide deep subject matter expertise across security domains including cloud, application and network security; identity and access management; data privacy and protection; and security operations.
  • Guide and influence security testing practices, including SAST, DAST, vulnerability assessments, and penetration testing
  • Partner with engineering teams to promote and implement security services and controls

Business Engagement & Communication

  • Translate complex security concepts into clear, actionable business language to influence decision-making
  • Act as a trusted advisor to senior business and technology leaders, ensuring security is aligned with strategic objectives

Mentorship & Team Leadership

  • Mentor and develop security architects, engineers, and project teams-raising overall security capability and maturity
  • Promote knowledge sharing, coaching, and continuous learning across the organization
  • Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and security-first thinking
About you
  • Multiple years of cybersecurity strategy, architecture, and design experience
  • Comprehensive understanding of multiple security domains
  • Demonstrated track record of anticipating emerging security threats, technologies, and industry trends, and translating them into actionable strategies.
  • Recognized as a security champion who leads through influence - coaching teams, amplifying best practices, and embedding security thinking across technical and business communities.
What success looks like
  • Security is proactively embedded into business initiatives rather than retrofitted
  • Business leaders clearly understand security risks, tradeoffs, and value
  • Engineering teams deliver secure, resilient solutions with minimal friction
  • Security capability across the organization is strengthened through mentorship and leadership
