What is the difference between Full Stack Data Engineer vs Data Scientist?

AspectFull Stack Data EngineerData Scientist
CredentialsBachelor's/Master's in CS, Data Engineering certificationsBachelor's/Master's in CS, Data Science or related fields
Work EnvironmentBuild data pipelines, manage databases, develop APIsAnalyze data, create models, generate insights
Industry UsageTech, finance, healthcare, where data infrastructure is keyResearch, analytics, product development teams

Full Stack Data Engineers focus on building and maintaining data infrastructure, integrating data from various sources, and ensuring data availability. Data Scientists analyze data, develop models, and generate insights. While both roles require strong technical skills, Full Stack Data Engineers are more involved in data pipeline development, whereas Data Scientists focus on data analysis and modeling.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Full Stack Data Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Stack Data Engineer, you need strong expertise in data modeling, ETL processes, and proficiency in both backend (e.g., Python, Java) and frontend (e.g., JavaScript, React) development, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with cloud platforms (such as AWS or Azure), big data tools (like Spark or Hadoop), and database systems (SQL and NoSQL) is typically required, and certifications in these technologies are advantageous. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills help you bridge gaps between data, development, and business teams. These skills ensure you can design, build, and maintain scalable data solutions that meet organizational needs efficiently.

How does a Full Stack Data Engineer typically balance responsibilities between backend data infrastructure and frontend data presentation tasks?

Full Stack Data Engineers are often required to split their time between developing robust backend data pipelines and creating user-facing tools or dashboards that visualize data insights. This dual responsibility means you'll need to prioritize tasks based on project needs, effectively collaborating with data scientists, analysts, and frontend developers. Communication is key, as you'll bridge gaps between technical teams and business stakeholders, ensuring data flows seamlessly from source systems to end users. Over time, many engineers find opportunities to specialize further or move into leadership roles overseeing data architecture and team strategy.

What is a Full Stack Data Engineer?

A Full Stack Data Engineer is a professional who designs, builds, and maintains the entire data pipeline, from data collection and storage to processing and visualization. They work with both the backend infrastructure (such as databases, data warehouses, and ETL processes) and frontend tools (like dashboards or reporting systems) to ensure data is accessible and usable for analytics. Full Stack Data Engineers possess skills in programming, database management, data modeling, cloud platforms, and often data visualization, allowing them to manage every stage of data flow within an organization.

Job description

Opiniion is a resident satisfaction software that partners with property management companies to create better living experiences for their residents. Our platform has helped thousands of property managers collect and act on real-time feedback, improve resident experiences, and enhance their online reputation. Opiniion is committed to exceptional service and innovation, earning recognition as one of America's fastest-growing private companies. Driven by a forward-thinking team, we're shaping the future of resident engagement. Our continued growth and commitment to innovation make this an exciting time to be part of our team!
LOCATION:Lehi, UT
THE ROLE
As a Full-Stack Developer at Opiniion, you'll help build and improve the products our customers use every day, working across the stack to ship features, improve reliability, and support a fast-moving product and engineering team.
This seat leans toward the connective tissue of the platform: the integrations and data pipelines that connect Opiniion to the property management systems our clients run their businesses on. When that data flows correctly, operators can act on resident feedback in real time. When it doesn't, they're flying blind. You'll own a critical layer while still contributing across front-end and back-end product work as priorities shift.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
  • Build, maintain, and extend integrations with property management systems including Yardi, RealPage, and Entrata, handling API communication, authentication, data mapping, and error recovery.
  • Design integration patterns that are reusable across PMS platforms, reducing the effort to onboard new partners and data sources.
  • Own the reliability of production integrations: monitoring, alerting, retry logic, and incident response when pipelines fail or degrade.
  • Build and maintain ETL pipelines that ingest, transform, and load data from external PMS platforms and internal sources into our data infrastructure, including performant SQL transformations.
  • Partner with analytics engineering to keep upstream data quality high so downstream dashboards and reporting stay trustworthy.
  • Contribute across the full stack, from front-end product work to back-end services, as the team's priorities move.

HOW WE BUILD WITH AI
AI is part of how we build. We expect engineers to use AI tools thoughtfully in their daily development to move faster and ship better work, while keeping sound engineering judgment. Claude is our primary AI platform.
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
  • 5+ years of professional software engineering experience.
  • True full-stack range: comfortable on the front end (JavaScript or TypeScript with a modern framework, Vue preferred, React welcome) and on the back end (services and APIs in Node.js and/or Python).
  • Strong SQL and solid relational data fundamentals (joins, CTEs, window functions, indexing).
  • Experience designing and consuming REST APIs, including auth flows (OAuth, API keys, token refresh), pagination, rate limiting, and error handling.
  • Comfortable in AWS (RDS, S3, ECS or Lambda, IAM basics) and using Docker for local development.
  • Disciplined with Git, pull requests, CI/CD, testing, and clear documentation.
  • Meaningful time spent on integrations, ETL, or data engineering work.
  • Strong Python proficiency for building services, scripts, and pipeline logic.

HOW YOU WORK
  • Ownership mindset: you treat what you ship as your responsibility, not just your code. When something breaks, you care about the fix and the prevention.
  • Strong communicator: you set clear expectations, surface problems early, and write things down so the team doesn't run on tribal knowledge.
  • Collaborative and low-ego: you give thoughtful code reviews, help teammates through blockers, and keep learning.
  • Autonomous: you can take a well-scoped problem and drive it to done, while knowing when to ask for help.

NICE-TO-HAVES
  • Experience integrating with property management systems (Yardi, RealPage, Entrata) or other proptech platforms.
  • Familiarity with ETL/ELT tooling (Fivetran, Airflow, or custom pipeline orchestration).
  • Ruby on Rails experience.
  • Databricks or Spark SQL experience.
  • Experience with MongoDB or other NoSQL data sources.

OUR TECHNOLOGY STACK
  • TypeScript, JavaScript, Python, Vue.js, Node.js
  • AWS, Docker
  • MongoDB, PostgreSQL, Drizzle
  • GitHub, CircleCI
