What is a Full Stack AI Engineer?

A Full Stack AI Engineer is a professional who develops and deploys artificial intelligence solutions across both the front-end and back-end of applications. They combine expertise in AI and machine learning with software engineering skills, allowing them to build, integrate, and maintain AI-powered features throughout the entire technology stack. Their responsibilities often include designing machine learning models, integrating them with APIs, and ensuring seamless user experiences on web or mobile platforms. Full Stack AI Engineers bridge the gap between data science and software development, enabling scalable and production-ready AI applications.

How do Full Stack AI Engineers typically collaborate with data scientists and front-end developers on AI-driven projects?

Full Stack AI Engineers often serve as the bridge between data scientists, who develop machine learning models, and front-end developers, who build user interfaces. They work closely with data scientists to understand the model requirements and deployment needs, and with front-end teams to ensure seamless integration of AI functionalities into applications. This collaboration requires effective communication skills and a clear understanding of both the technical and user experience aspects. Regular meetings, code reviews, and shared documentation are common practices to facilitate smooth teamwork and successful project outcomes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Full Stack AI Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Stack AI Engineer, you need strong programming skills (such as Python, JavaScript), understanding of machine learning algorithms, and experience with both front-end and back-end development, often supported by a degree in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with frameworks like TensorFlow or PyTorch, cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP), and containerization tools (Docker, Kubernetes) is typically required. Excellent problem-solving abilities, collaboration, and effective communication are standout soft skills in this role. These skills and qualifications enable the seamless integration of AI models into scalable applications, ensuring innovative and robust solutions.

Job description

Overview

LMI is looking for a Full Stack Developer to help build and extend IronGate, an ETL solution focused on moving data from commercial environments into secure environments. You'll be an initial member of a small, cross-functional team maintaining this product on contract. This position requires the ability to obtain a clearance;  U.S. citizenship is required. This is position includes quarterly travel for in person team planning and collaboration events.

This isn't a maintain-the-backlog role. You'll work across the stack, own features end-to-end, and help shape how this solution is built for long term success for our clients.

About This Team

IronGate sits within LMI's Chief Technology Office. We're a small, high-visibility team building an ETL for federal agencies. The culture is more startup than traditional government contractor; we move fast, solve problems in design spikes rather than scheduled reviews, and care more about outcomes than process. That said, we're building for users who need reliability and trust, so craft and attention to detail matter.

You'll work daily with our Product Manager, Engineering Lead, and Product Team. The roadmap for IronGate is still being formed, so you'll be joining during a great time to help forge our path forward.

LMI is a new breed of digital solutions provider dedicated to accelerating government impact with innovation and speed. Investing in technology and prototypes ahead of need, LMI brings commercial-grade platforms and mission-ready AI to federal agencies at commercial speed.

Leveraging our mission-ready technology and solutions, proven expertise in federal deployment, and strategic relationships, we enhance outcomes for the government, efficiently and effectively. With a focus on agility and collaboration, LMI serves the defense, space, healthcare, and energy sectors-helping agencies navigate complexity and outpace change. Headquartered in Tysons, Virginia, LMI is committed to delivering impactful results that strengthen missions and drive lasting value.

Responsibilities

What You'll Do

  • Build and ship full stack features across frontend (Angular) and our IronGate API
  • Design and implement solutions for moving and transforming commercial data
  • Use AI coding tools as a daily part of your development workflow
  • Integrate and maintain connections to external services, data sources, and APIs as part execution flows
  • Collaborate directly with our product manager in working sessions, shaping UX decisions rather than just implementing them
  • Contribute to backend architecture decisions around data transformation, handling, and security
  • Ship incrementally and stay close to users, getting things in front of people rather than perfecting in isolation
Qualifications

What We're Looking For

  • 3+ years of full stack development experience, or fewer years with demonstrable depth in ETL solutions; comfortable owning both frontend and backend
  • Proficiency in Angular and TypeScript on the frontend
  • Solid backend experience in Node.js and/or Python
  • Experience using PostgreSQL to store, retrieve, and manage structured application data, with experience in database design, SQL development, and operational support
  • Active use of AI-assisted development tools in your day-to-day coding workflow
  • Experience designing and developing RESTful APIs and backend services that support scalable, maintainable integration across distributed application components
  • Ability to move fast and iterate without heavy specs or detailed tickets
  • This position requires the ability to obtain a clearance;  U.S. citizenship is required

What Will Set You Apart

  • A portfolio of side projects, personal websites, open-source contributions, or other evidence of a builder's disposition; we care more about what you've built than where you've worked
  • Demonstrated fluency with AI coding tools and a workflow that treats them as force multipliers, not novelties
  • Experience across AWS, Azure, GCP, and on-premises environments.
  • Experience developing software in environments governed by federal security and compliance requirements, with attention to secure coding practices, access control, auditability, and deployment constraints

Target salary range: $100,000 - 175,000

The salary range displayed represents the typical salary range for this position and is not a guarantee of compensation. Individual salaries are determined by various factors including, but not limited to location, internal equity, business considerations, client contract requirements, and candidate qualifications, such as education, experience, skills, and security clearances.

#LI-SH1

Applicants must meet eligibility requirements for a U.S. Government security clearance. Only US Citizens are eligible for a security clearance. For this position, LMI will only consider applicants with security clearances or applicants who are eligible for security clearances, due to the nature of the work.
