What is a Full Stack AI Engineer?

A Full Stack AI Engineer is a professional who develops and deploys artificial intelligence solutions across both the front-end and back-end of applications. They combine expertise in AI and machine learning with software engineering skills, allowing them to build, integrate, and maintain AI-powered features throughout the entire technology stack. Their responsibilities often include designing machine learning models, integrating them with APIs, and ensuring seamless user experiences on web or mobile platforms. Full Stack AI Engineers bridge the gap between data science and software development, enabling scalable and production-ready AI applications.

How do Full Stack AI Engineers typically collaborate with data scientists and front-end developers on AI-driven projects?

Full Stack AI Engineers often serve as the bridge between data scientists, who develop machine learning models, and front-end developers, who build user interfaces. They work closely with data scientists to understand the model requirements and deployment needs, and with front-end teams to ensure seamless integration of AI functionalities into applications. This collaboration requires effective communication skills and a clear understanding of both the technical and user experience aspects. Regular meetings, code reviews, and shared documentation are common practices to facilitate smooth teamwork and successful project outcomes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Full Stack AI Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Stack AI Engineer, you need strong programming skills (such as Python, JavaScript), understanding of machine learning algorithms, and experience with both front-end and back-end development, often supported by a degree in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with frameworks like TensorFlow or PyTorch, cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP), and containerization tools (Docker, Kubernetes) is typically required. Excellent problem-solving abilities, collaboration, and effective communication are standout soft skills in this role. These skills and qualifications enable the seamless integration of AI models into scalable applications, ensuring innovative and robust solutions.

The ideal candidate is a high-agency engineer with strong expertise in React-based front-end systems, modern backend frameworks, and secure public-facing application architecture, combined with hands-on experience using AI-driven development tools and agentic coding workflows. Domain experience in Insurance or Financial Services is a big plus.
If you are excited about using tools like Claude Code, GitHub CoPilot, Cursor, Lovable, Replit, and other AI-native development tools to dramatically accelerate product development, we want to talk to you.
What You'll Do:
Build and Ship Production Applications:
  • Architect and develop enterprise-grade full stack applications.
  • Design and build high-quality React front-end systems.
  • Develop scalable backend services using modern server-side frameworks.
  • Deploy secure public-facing applications in production environments.
  • Ensure performance, reliability, and maintainability of distributed systems.

AI-Accelerated Development:
  • Use AI coding tools such as Claude Code, CoPilot, Cursor, Replit, Lovable and similar environments to dramatically accelerate development cycles.
  • Implement AI-driven development workflows including agentic coding, prompt-driven engineering, and automated code generation.
  • Rapidly prototype and iterate on new product ideas.
  • Evaluate and integrate emerging AI developer tools.

  • Quickly build and validate new front-end applications and internal tools.
  • Partner with business stakeholders to transform ideas into working software.
  • Develop prototypes that evolve into production-ready enterprise systems.
  • Help establish Fortegra's modern AI-first engineering culture.

Security and Production Readiness:
  • Design and implement secure architectures for public-facing applications.
  • Implement authentication, authorization, and secure API design.
  • Apply best practices in application security, cloud security, and compliance.
  • Ensure secure handling of sensitive financial and customer data.

The above-cited duties and responsibilities describe the general nature and level of work performed by people assigned to the job. They are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all the duties and responsibilities that an incumbent may be expected or asked to perform.
Required Qualifications:
  • 7+ years of professional software engineering experience.
  • Significant experience designing and deploying enterprise-grade applications.
  • Expert-level proficiency with React and modern front-end frameworks.
  • Strong experience with at least one server-side framework such as:
    • Node.js / NestJS / Express
    • Python (FastAPI, Django)
    • .NET Core
  • Experience building and deploying secure public-facing applications
  • Strong knowledge of API design, distributed systems, and cloud architectures.
  • Hands-on experience using AI coding tools such as:
    • Claude Code
    • Cursor

  • Strong ability to prototype quickly and iterate rapidly.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Insurance or Financial Services domain experience.
  • Experience building AI-enabled products or developer tooling.
  • Familiarity with LLMs, AI agents, and prompt engineering.
  • Experience with serverless and cloud-native architectures.
  • Experience deploying applications in AWS, Azure, or GCP.
  • Experience building internal platforms or developer tooling.
  • Startup or high-velocity product development experience.

What Makes This Role Unique:
