Job description

Ballard's Commercial team is recruiting for 3 Field Service Technicians to be located on the East Coast (New York) and 2 Technicians based in Northern/Southern California. The Field Service Technician is responsible for the repair, refurbishment, testing, and maintenance of fuel cell modules and components for Ballard’s customers. This role combines hands-on technical work, troubleshooting, inventory support, customer training, and service documentation to ensure products are repaired restored and maintained to the highest quality and safety standards.
Key Responsibilities:
Repair and Refurbishment
  • Perform repair, retrofit, refurbishment, and reconditioning activities for fuel cell modules and components across all products in the field.
  • Execute mechanical and electrical repairs in accordance with established procedures, technical specifications, and quality standards.
  • Conduct functional testing, leak testing, and verification activities to ensure equipment performance and reliability.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives related to repair and refurbishment processes.

Troubleshooting and Technical Support
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and system-level issues on fuel cell modules and related components.
  • Support testing activities and assist in identifying root causes of product failures.
  • Collaborate with advanced support teams, engineering, quality, and operations teams to resolve technical issues and implement corrective actions.

Field Service Support
  • Travel frequently to customer and operational sites, to perform maintenance, repairs, retrofits, commissioning support, and troubleshooting activities, including trips that may require short-notice scheduling and overnight stays.
  • Provide timely and professional technical support in the field while ensuring compliance with safety and operational procedures.
  • Represent the company professionally when interacting with customers and external stakeholders.

Customer Training
  • Train customers and service partners on module repair procedures, leak testing methods, and maintenance best practices.
  • Deliver hands-on instruction and technical guidance to support safe and effective equipment operation and servicing.

Documentation and Record Keeping
  • Maintain accurate and complete work logs, repair records, inspection reports, and service documentation to support quality, traceability, and customer service requirements.
  • Ensure all repair and testing activities are documented in accordance with company and quality management requirements.
  • Provide detailed feedback on product performance, recurring issues, and service trends.

Qualifications:
Education amp; Experience
  • Technical diploma, trade certification, or equivalent education in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, Mechatronics, Industrial Instrumentation, Automotive Technology, or a related field.
  • 2+ years of experience in field service, equipment maintenance, repair, manufacturing, or another hands-on technical service environment.
  • Experience with fuel cells, hydrogen systems, industrial equipment, power systems, or electro-mechanical products is considered an asset.
Knowledge, Skills amp; Abilities
  • Strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, schematics, wiring diagrams, and service documentation.
  • Experience using diagnostic tools, test equipment, and hand tools.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and service documentation systems.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
Additional Requirements
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel frequently for customer support and service activities, including domestic and international travel as business needs require.
  • Ability to lift, move, and handle materials, tools, and equipment in accordance with workplace safety guidelines.
  • Ability to work safely in industrial, manufacturing, and customer-site environments.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including occasional evenings, weekends, and extended shifts, to support customer service requirements and travel schedules.

The salary range for this position is between $55,500 – 74,000 USD. Candidate's experience, education, and relevant skills will be taken into consideration when placing within the range.
