Fuel System Design Engineer information

What is a fuel system design engineer?

Fuel System Design Engineers are specialized engineers who design, develop, and test fuel systems for vehicles, aircraft, or industrial equipment. Their work involves ensuring that fuel delivery systems are efficient, safe, and meet regulatory standards. They collaborate with other engineering teams to integrate fuel systems with engines and other components, and use tools like CAD software for system modeling. These engineers also analyze system performance, troubleshoot issues, and may be involved in testing prototypes or supporting production. The role requires strong knowledge of fluid dynamics, materials, and safety regulations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a fuel system design engineer?

To thrive as a Fuel System Design Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical or aerospace engineering, a strong understanding of fluid dynamics, and relevant experience in fuel system components. Familiarity with CAD software (such as CATIA or SolidWorks), simulation tools, and industry standards is typically required, alongside certifications like Professional Engineer (PE) licensure. Excellent problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and clear communication skills set outstanding candidates apart in this role. These skills and qualities ensure the safe, efficient, and innovative design of fuel systems that meet stringent regulatory and performance requirements.

What are some typical challenges faced by fuel system design engineers when collaborating with cross-functional teams?

Fuel System Design Engineers often work closely with teams from mechanical, electrical, and manufacturing disciplines to ensure that fuel system components integrate seamlessly with the overall vehicle architecture. A common challenge is balancing conflicting requirements, such as safety standards, cost targets, and spatial constraints, while meeting performance goals. Clear communication and early alignment with stakeholders are crucial to avoid costly redesigns and ensure the system meets all regulatory and operational demands. Being adaptable and proactive in problem-solving helps Fuel System Design Engineers navigate these interdisciplinary challenges effectively.

What is the difference between Fuel System Design Engineer vs Mechanical Engineer?

AspectFuel System Design EngineerMechanical Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Mechanical, Automotive, or Aerospace Engineering; specialized training in fuel systemsBachelor's in Mechanical Engineering; broader engineering focus
Work EnvironmentAutomotive, aerospace, or industrial settings focusing on fuel systemsVarious industries including manufacturing, automotive, aerospace, and energy

Job description

Job Title: Systems Engineer (Level II and Level 3-4)

Job Description

This role provides system-level engineering support as part of a cross-functional team developing complex electromechanical systems, with a focus on requirements, system documentation, design reviews, and support across the full system lifecycle. The position is open to both Level II systems engineers with at least 2 years of experience and systems engineers with 5 or more years of experience. You will work closely with internal teams and external customers to define requirements, maintain traceability, support verification and validation activities, and ensure successful transition from concept through production for advanced maritime and underwater technology programs.

Responsibilities

  • Support system-level engineering activities across the full lifecycle, including concept development, system design, integration, test, and transition to production.
  • Write, maintain, and update technical documentation such as requirements, specifications, interface control documents, compliance matrices, and test plans.
  • Develop and document engineering processes and standards that meet customer and program requirements.
  • Prepare documentation for and support formal system design and review events, including System Requirements Review (SRR), System Functional Review (SFR), Preliminary Design Review (PDR), Critical Design Review (CDR), and Test Readiness Review (TRR).
  • Work directly with customers to define, clarify, and refine system requirements and ensure alignment throughout the program lifecycle.
  • Establish and maintain requirements traceability and support verification and validation (V&V) activities to confirm systems meet specified requirements.
  • Identify, analyze, and help solve moderate-complexity engineering problems in a timely and structured manner.
  • Apply and support digital engineering and model-based systems engineering (MBSE) practices, including SysML modeling, where appropriate.
  • Support systems engineering tasks such as architecture development, system integration planning, risk management, and configuration management.
  • Use requirements management tools such as DOORS or DOORS Next Generation (DNG) to manage, track, and maintain requirements baselines.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including hardware, software, and test engineers, to ensure cohesive system designs and smooth integration.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of systems engineering documentation, configuration control, and documentation standards.
  • Support programs involving sonar, weapons systems, and underwater technologies by providing clear, accurate, and timely engineering artifacts and technical input.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering with 2+ years of related experience, or a Master’s degree in engineering (relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of a degree).
  • 2+ years of systems engineering experience for Level II roles; 5+ years of systems engineering experience for Level III
  • Demonstrated experience with systems engineering activities such as requirements development, traceability, verification and validation (V&V), and configuration management.
  • Ability to write and maintain technical documentation, including requirements, specifications, interface documents, compliance matrices, and test plans.
  • Understanding of model-based systems engineering (MBSE) concepts and practices.
  • Experience using DOORS or DOORS Next Generation (DNG) for requirements management.
  • Familiarity with digital engineering approaches and system-level design reviews.
  • Ability to identify and resolve moderate-complexity engineering problems in a structured and timely manner.
  • Strong communication skills to collaborate with cross-functional teams and interact directly with customers.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with Microsoft Power BI for reporting and data visualization.
  • Experience with Microsoft SharePoint for document management and collaboration.
  • Exposure to data analysis or data science tools and workflows.
  • Electro-mechanical hardware design experience or familiarity with electromechanical systems.
  • Familiarity with naval systems, naval operations, or maritime environments, including work related to sonar, weapons systems, or underwater technology.
  • Experience with model-based systems engineering tools such as Cameo Enterprise Architect.
  • Experience using MATLAB for modeling, analysis, or simulation.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools for documentation, presentations, and analysis.
  • Experience supporting formal design reviews such as SRR, SFR, PDR, CDR, and TRR.
  • Experience working in or with government or defense-related programs.

Work Environment

The role is primarily based in an onsite office environment, with hybrid flexibility depending on business needs and program requirements. Team members may on occasion work on base at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC), supporting hands-on activities and direct customer interaction. The organization offers flexible work schedules, including options such as 9/80, 4/10, or 5/8 schedules, subject to project needs and coordination with leadership. The culture emphasizes a results-oriented mindset, where as long as the work gets done and customer commitments are met, there is reasonable flexibility in how the schedule is managed. The work involves close collaboration with cross-functional engineering teams and customers on advanced sonar, weapons systems, and underwater technology programs in a professional office and lab-oriented setting.
