What is the difference between Frontline Substitute vs Classroom Assistant?

AspectFrontline SubstituteClassroom Assistant
CredentialsVaries by state, often requires a substitute teaching permit or certificationTypically requires a high school diploma or equivalent; some positions prefer related experience
Work EnvironmentWorks across multiple classrooms, filling in for teachers temporarilyAssists in a specific classroom, supporting teacher and students regularly
Employer & IndustrySchool districts, educational institutionsSchool districts, elementary or middle schools
Search & Comparison IntentLooking for temporary teaching roles, flexible schedulesSupporting classroom activities, consistent daily presence

Frontline Substitute roles focus on filling in for teachers temporarily across various classrooms, requiring specific certifications. Classroom Assistants support daily classroom activities and usually work in a consistent environment. Both roles are essential in educational settings but differ in responsibilities and credentials.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a frontline substitute, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Frontline Substitute, you need a solid understanding of classroom management, instructional techniques, and typically a bachelor's degree or teaching certification, depending on district requirements. Familiarity with educational software, attendance systems, and lesson plan platforms like Frontline Education is often required. Flexibility, strong communication, and adaptability are essential soft skills that help substitutes effectively engage students and manage changing environments. These skills ensure continuity of instruction, maintain classroom order, and support student learning in the absence of the regular teacher.

What are some common challenges faced by frontline substitutes and how can they be addressed?

Frontline Substitutes often face challenges such as adapting quickly to new classroom environments, managing unfamiliar student groups, and following lesson plans left by absent teachers. Building effective classroom management skills and maintaining flexibility are essential for success. It helps to arrive early, review any provided materials, and communicate proactively with other staff members or administrators. Additionally, developing a network with other substitutes or permanent teachers can provide valuable support and resources.

What is a frontline substitute?

Frontline substitutes are temporary educators who fill in for regular teachers or staff members when they are absent. They are often managed and scheduled through the Frontline Education platform, which schools use to track absences and find available substitutes quickly. These professionals ensure continuity in classroom instruction and maintain a safe, productive learning environment for students. Substitutes may work in various grade levels and subjects depending on the school's needs and their own qualifications.

Job description

Landmark Christian School Substitute Teacher
Substitutes will need to submit an application for employment. Once we have reviewed your application, we will call to set up a time for you to interview with one of our Principals or Assistant Principals. They will notify the HR department if they want to offer you a substitute position. Our HR department will send out information for you to complete giving permission to run a background check. Once we receive the results you will be sent Onboarding information.
Once youโ€™ve been hired and your Onboarding is completed, substitute teachers will be entered in the Frontline system at which point you will receive an email notification to โ€œactivateโ€ your account, and a link for the Frontline Education app. If you do not receive this email, please check your spam folder for this email notification from Frontline. The account login information will be the email address you provide on your application. The phone number you provide on your application will be your password. You may change it at any time. Once you log in for the first time, you should start receiving substitute teacher requests. You may choose and accept jobs using the Frontline app on your phone or from your email.
Accepting a Substitute Request: You will receive job notices by email and app notification, and you can accept a job through either format. The job will list the teacher, date, hours, and grade/subject area.
โ— Jobs posted to cover for a Teacher Assistant are either for the Elementary or Middle School.
โ— Please note that elective classes (World Language, Film, Fine Arts, Technology, etc.) are often a mix of middle school and high school classes. The sub program will only allow us to list a teacher in middle school or high school, not both. We typically list teachers by the area in which they have the most classes.
โ— Be sure to check the times carefully, as some jobs are half days or for specific class periods.
Releasing a Previously Accepted Request: If your schedule changes and you are unable to keep a job you accepted: Log into Frontline and โ€œreleaseโ€ the job. Please be sure to do this as soon as possible when you know you will be unable to fill the duties.
