Staff BESS Electrical Design Engineer (EPC) — Architect the Grid's Battery Future

San Francisco, CA | Full-Time | $190,000 – $252,500

The Opportunity

Every megawatt-hour of grid storage that comes online needs an engineer who understands both sides of the inverter. Our client — a rapidly scaling clean energy innovator — is hiring a Staff BESS Electrical Design Engineer to lead utility-scale lithium-ion storage projects from first concept through energization. As Electrical Engineer of Record and the company's internal BESS authority, you'll shape how grid-scale batteries get designed, interconnected, and built — with top-of-market compensation to match the responsibility.

Why You'll Love It

  • Premium pay: $190K–$252.5K base
  • Dual authority: EOR on your projects and company-wide SME on all things BESS
  • Complete design scope: AC and DC systems, from battery modules to the utility interconnection
  • Push the frontier: Lead R&D into MV-DC distribution for next-generation storage integration

What You'll Do

  • Lead utility-scale lithium-ion BESS engineering — system sizing and layout through construction
  • Design AC and DC systems with MV transformers, inverters, DC combiners, energy managers, and battery modules; specify and procure long-lead equipment
  • Develop schematics, single-lines, wiring diagrams, raceway and grounding plans, and protection strategies
  • Interface with utilities and ISO/RTOs on interconnection studies, submittals, permitting, and compliance
  • Lead code compliance across NEC 705/706, IEEE 1547, UL 9540, and NFPA 855
  • Perform short circuit, load flow, arc flash, and protective device coordination studies for AC and DC systems
  • Serve as Electrical Engineer of Record for assigned projects
  • Coordinate civil, structural, fire & life safety, SCADA/telecom, and geotech teams into complete IFC packages
  • Support construction administration — RFIs, submittals, change orders, site inspections
  • Prepare cost estimates and schedules, QA/QC designs, mentor junior engineers, and set design standards

What You'll Bring

  • BS/MS in Electrical Engineering (ABET)
  • Active PE (Nevada or reciprocity-eligible); NV and SC licensure within 2 months of start
  • 5+ years in solar, energy storage, or microgrids, including 3+ in BESS design and deployment
  • Proven BESS interconnection and regulatory compliance expertise
  • SME-level command of NEC 705/706, IEEE 1547, UL 9540, NFPA 855
  • Advanced proficiency: HOMER (or similar), ETAP/SKM, AutoCAD/Revit, Navisworks, Bluebeam
  • Bonus points: PSSE/PSLF, PSCAD, SEL AcSELerator, HVDC/converter station design
  • Working fluency in peak shaving, load shifting, demand response, and frequency response

Design the storage systems the grid is waiting for. Apply now.
