A Frontend Engineering Manager is a technical leader responsible for overseeing a team of frontend developers who build and maintain the user interface of web or mobile applications. In addition to managing people and projects, they help define best practices, ensure high code quality, and collaborate with designers, backend engineers, and product managers. They are responsible for team growth, technical direction, and delivering features that provide a seamless user experience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a frontend engineering manager?

To thrive as a Frontend Engineering Manager, you need deep expertise in frontend technologies (such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and frameworks like React or Angular) along with proven experience leading engineering teams. Familiarity with code versioning tools (e.g., Git), CI/CD pipelines, and agile project management systems is typically required. Exceptional communication, mentorship, and problem-solving skills help foster high-performing teams and drive project success. These capabilities are critical for delivering quality user interfaces, ensuring technical excellence, and supporting the professional growth of your team.

Job description

About the Role

This is a high-ownership Senior Frontend Engineering role at a fast-growing AI platform company serving the logistics and trade compliance industry. You'll architect and evolve a real-time, data-intensive product used daily by operations teams navigating complex global trade workflows - bridging sophisticated backend AI with the humans who depend on it.

What You'll Do
  • Lead the migration and evolution of frontend architecture to support real-time, data-heavy dashboards using TypeScript, React, and Tailwind CSS.

  • Build intuitive human-in-the-loop AI interfaces that make automated workflows transparent, explainable, and easy for operations teams to manage.

  • Own the full product lifecycle - from technical discovery and scoping through to production monitoring.

  • Define frontend technical vision, mentor incoming engineers, and raise the bar for engineering culture.

  • Ensure core services maintain high uptime while gracefully handling unpredictable real-world document inputs.

  • Work directly with leadership and customers to understand operational needs and ship fast.

What We're Looking For
  • 6-8+ years of professional software engineering experience in high-growth, fast-paced environments.

  • Deep proficiency in TypeScript and React, including architecting complex state management for data-intensive applications.

  • Strong command of Python for backend services and advanced SQL (PostgreSQL) for database design and query optimization.

  • Prior startup experience in a meaningful engineering role (not just a small side project).

  • Bias for action - prefers shipping over over-engineering and drives cross-functional delivery with minimal supervision.

  • Solid CS fundamentals and engineering foundations.

  • Experience integrating AI APIs and handling complex document extraction workflows is a plus.

  • Familiarity with logistics, supply chain, or enterprise workflow software is a plus.

Compensation & Benefits

Base salary range: $180,000 - $260,000 USD annually, plus equity. Visa transfers (H-1B, OPT, O-1) are considered; new visa sponsorship is not available.

Location

On-site in San Francisco, CA. Candidates must be based in or willing to relocate to San Francisco.
