Junior and mid-level software engineers are encouraged to apply! Join a delivery team that builds and supports high volume, distributed software that powers critical enterprise document management. In this role, you'll work in an agile environment to design, develop, and support Nelnet's enterprise Imaging/Document Management system. This includes backend services in C#/.NET, frontend Angular web apps, SQL Server databases, and third-party document management and imaging applications.

External candidates must reside within a 30-mile radius of one of the below office locations:

Centennial, CO

Lincoln, NE

Madison, WI

Boise, ID

Brownsville, TX

Nelnet believes in a hybrid work environment. The standard hybrid work schedule includes 24 hours of in-office work each week, for associates that reside within 30 miles of an office. This is subject to change, based on manager discretion.

NOTE: Internal Associates working in a remote capacity may be considered for this position.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Participate in solution design to satisfy a wide range of business needs.
  • Analysis and translation of business requirements into technical requirements for development, and creation of design documents and technical specifications.
  • Adhere to Best Practices and Standards in the areas of technology and security.
  • Provide post implementation support including, but not limited to, monitoring application performance and debugging existing code.
  • Keep abreast of advancements and changes in technology and develop an understanding of how new technologies can be leveraged provide business solutions.

EDUCATION:
Candidates with a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science and/or a related discipline or work experience preferred.

EXPERIENCE:
Candidates preferably have 2-5+ years of software development experience with strong proficiency in at least one key competency is valued.

COMPETENCIES - SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES:

  • Develops backend web services in C# with .NET that implement business requirements for highvolume workflows, with attention to performance and maintainability.

  • Develops frontend web applications using TypeScript/JavaScript with Angular; uses component libraries and validates alignment to WCAG & Section 508 expectations.

  • Writes efficient SQL and understands relational modeling, ideally with SQL Server.

  • Uses Git in a team setting (branching, pull requests, readable commits) and participates effectively in code review to improve correctness and maintainability.

  • Writes highly-testable code and contributes to automated unit and integration tests.

  • Applies secure coding practices and works within security/compliance requirements informed by standards such as NIST; responsibly manages software dependencies and secrets.

  • Identifies and diagnoses issues by reading logs, tracing distributed workflows, and using monitoring tools to pinpoint root causes; participates in on-call and production release processes.

  • Works within established service boundaries and clean-architecture conventions, keeping business logic separated from infrastructure and avoiding tight coupling across services.

  • Uses AI-assisted tools while following organizational data-handling and security policies.

  • Ability to perform effectively in a team-oriented environment.

  • Possesses a strong understanding of the full software development lifecycle with experience in agile delivery models.

  • Has the ability to quickly learn new technologies, domain concepts, and business processes within a complex regulatory environment.

  • Communicates clearly and effectively in both verbal and written forms, adapting to technical and nontechnical audiences.

  • Takes ownership of assigned work through completion, proactively surfacing risks and ensuring deliverables are productionready.

  • Produces clear documentation that supports longterm maintainability, onboarding, and operational support.

  • Ability to obtain a federal security clearance

  • Experience with enterprise document management system is a plus

Starting salary range for this position: $90,000 - $130,000 annually

This position requires work in support of the Company's contract with the United States Department of Education ("ED"). As such, the United States Government requires that any applicant for this position must complete United States Government security clearance. Effective June 1, 2018, ED has informed Nelnet that security clearance applications for foreign nationals are not being accepted or processed. In light of this direction from ED, Nelnet will be unable to hire applicants without United States citizenship for such positions.
