What Does a Front End Web Developer Do?

A front end web developer develops the visual components of a website that are seen and interacted with by a user. This is also called the user interface. In this job, you work with code such as HTML and JavaScript and utilize CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) to layout web pages. Unlike a back end developer, you focus on more than just performance and function. Your responsibilities include developing appealing yet functional desktop and mobile websites and applications, conducting maintenance and updates, and creating site mockups. These duties require you to work closely with back-end developers and stay updated on new technology, website development, and design trends.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Front End Web Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Front End Web Developer, you need strong proficiency in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, typically supported by a relevant degree or coding bootcamp experience. Familiarity with frameworks like React or Angular, version control systems such as Git, and an understanding of responsive design tools are highly valued. Creativity, attention to detail, and effective collaboration skills help developers build engaging and user-friendly interfaces. These skills ensure the delivery of functional, visually appealing, and accessible web applications that meet both user and business needs.

What are some common challenges Front End Web Developers face when working on cross-functional teams?

Front End Web Developers often collaborate closely with designers, back-end developers, and product managers, which can present challenges such as aligning design intentions with technical feasibility and managing differing priorities or timelines. Communication is key to ensuring designs are implemented as intended and that technical constraints are understood by all team members. Additionally, coordinating code integration and maintaining consistency across the user interface can require extra attention, especially in agile or fast-paced environments.

What are front end web developers?

Front end web developers are professionals who design and build the visible parts of websites and web applications—the parts that users interact with directly. They use technologies like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to create responsive, user-friendly interfaces, ensuring that web pages look good and function well across different devices and browsers. Their work involves collaborating with designers and back end developers to implement visual elements, optimize performance, and improve the overall user experience.

Job description

Apple Business (business.apple.com) is the primary destination connecting Apple directly with enterprises and businesses of all sizes - serving millions of customers around the world. We are building the shared web platform that powers this experience and enables multiple product teams across Apple to ship confidently on a single, high-performance, mission-critical foundation.
Description
As a Senior Web Platform Engineer, you will build the APIs, primitives, and shared capabilities that product teams across Apple rely on to move quickly and ship with confidence. You are someone who thinks of the platform itself as a product - with a deep sense of ownership over the developer experience, the quality of the contracts you expose, and the autonomy you enable for the teams building on top of you. You are genuinely excited about agentic engineering and you bring that curiosity to rethinking how your team and the teams around you design and ship software. You will be a force multiplier: the work you do will directly raise the quality and velocity of every team on the platform.
This is a high-impact, deeply technical role that sits at the intersection of platform engineering and developer experience. You will collaborate closely with engineering leadership, security, and product teams to define what "great" looks like for an enterprise-grade shared web platform at Apple scale.
","responsibilities":"Design and publish clean, well-documented, versioned client APIs consumed by multiple internal product teams - prioritizing ergonomics, backward compatibility, and strong contracts on a mission-critical, externally-facing system.
Partner closely with platform consumers (tenant teams) to deeply understand their workflows, identify friction, and drive platform improvements that increase team autonomy and reduce time-to-ship.
Build self-serve capabilities, shared primitives, and golden-path tooling that allow product teams to ship features independently without requiring deep platform expertise.
Design, build, and maintain the shared web platform for business.apple.com, ensuring it is performant, reliable, and extensible for all teams building on top of it.
Define and enforce platform-wide performance standards; lead initiatives around Core Web Vitals, bundle size, rendering strategies, and caching to maintain a best-in-class end-user experience.
Architect and implement a robust observability stack (logging, metrics, distributed tracing, real-user monitoring) that gives every tenant meaningful signal into their application's health.
Establish reliability standards - define SLOs, runbooks, and incident response playbooks - and champion a culture of operational excellence across the platform.
Mentor engineers across the broader organization and contribute to technical strategy, architectural reviews, and cross-functional planning.
Maintain platform build tooling and CI/CD pipelines that support fast, safe, and consistent delivery for all tenant teams.
Preferred Qualifications
Genuine enthusiasm for agentic engineering - experience building or harnessing AI agents, designing multi-agent orchestration workflows, and applying these capabilities to meaningfully accelerate and reimagine the software development lifecycle.
Experience with micro-frontend architectures, module federation, or multi-tenant web application patterns.
Familiarity with edge computing, CDN configuration, and server-side rendering / streaming SSR strategies.
Experience with accessibility (WCAG 2.1+) at the platform level - building shared components and tooling that make compliance the path of least resistance for tenants.
Background in e-commerce, enterprise SaaS, or similarly high-availability, externally-facing digital commerce platforms.
Experience contributing to or maintaining open-source developer tooling.
Familiarity with platform engineering concepts: internal developer portals, service catalogs, golden paths, and paved-road infrastructure.
Minimum Qualifications
8+ years of professional software engineering experience with a strong focus on front-end or full-stack web platform engineering at scale.
Strong track record designing developer-facing client APIs - versioned, ergonomic, backward-compatible, and well-documented - on production systems with high reliability requirements.
Proven experience building shared web platforms consumed by multiple internal product teams, with a genuine product mindset toward the developer experience.
Expert-level knowledge of modern JavaScript/TypeScript, browser rendering pipelines, and web performance optimization techniques.
Strong systems thinking - you understand how architectural choices ripple through a large, multi-team codebase and can make principled trade-offs.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to produce clear architectural proposals, API documentation, and runbooks that raise the bar across the engineering organization.
Solid experience with observability tooling and practices: distributed tracing (OpenTelemetry or equivalent), structured logging, metrics pipelines, dashboarding, and alerting.
Deep understanding of web authentication protocols (OAuth 2.0, OIDC, SAML) and experience implementing secure, production-grade auth infrastructure in large-scale applications.
Hands-on experience with CI/CD systems and build tooling (Webpack, Vite, esbuild, or equivalent), with the ability to evolve and maintain platform delivery infrastructure.
