About the Role:
We are seeking a Staff Software Engineer to help build and enhance owner authenticated web experiences where customers interact with their vehicle, account, and ownership features across GM digital experiences.
This role will contribute across both the front end and back end, with a strong emphasis on React-based UI development and Java-based services. Within this space, the strategic web direction is aligned to the Global Web Platform stack built on React, while the current backend model includes Java and Spring Boot services that act as gateway and business-layer components.
The ideal candidate is a seasoned software engineer who can lead complex technical initiatives, shape architecture, influence engineering direction across teams, and deliver high-quality solutions with a high degree of autonomy.
Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the architecture, design, and delivery of scalable full stack solutions for owner authenticated web experiences across web applications and supporting backend services.
  • Drive front-end engineering direction through reusable, accessible, and performant React components, patterns, and modern UI practices aligned to GM web platform direction.
  • Design and evolve Java and Spring Boot backend services and APIs that support customer-facing product capabilities, integrations, scalability, and operational excellence.
  • Own complex technical initiatives end to end across the front end and back end, from solution design and implementation through rollout, support, and continuous improvement.
  • Partner with product, design, and peer engineering teams to shape technical strategy and deliver high-impact owner-facing authenticated web capabilities.
  • Influence application architecture, platform patterns, and engineering standards across multiple workstreams and teams.
  • Proactively identify system risks, performance bottlenecks, and technical debt, and lead efforts to improve reliability, maintainability, and developer efficiency.
  • Guide code reviews, testing strategy, CI/CD practices, and production readiness to ensure high-quality software delivery.
  • Mentor and support engineers across the team, raising the bar on design quality, implementation practices, and technical decision-making.
  • Collaborate effectively across teams and domains, connecting technical execution to broader GM digital platform initiatives and business goals.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, Mathematics, or a closely related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 8 years of software engineering experience.
  • Deep front-end development expertise with React and modern JavaScript or TypeScript frameworks, architecture patterns, and tooling.
  • Strong backend development expertise with Java and Spring Boot or comparable enterprise Java frameworks.
  • Experience designing, building, and evolving distributed systems, RESTful APIs, and integrations between front-end applications and backend services.
  • Strong understanding of software engineering fundamentals including system design, version control, testing, debugging, performance optimization, and software development lifecycle practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead complex technical initiatives with a high degree of autonomy and sound engineering judgment.
  • Ability to influence technical direction, drive standards, and make decisions that improve scalability, maintainability, quality, and delivery effectiveness.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills with the ability to influence peers, partner effectively with cross-functional stakeholders, and mentor other engineers.

What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)
  • Experience leading modernization of legacy web applications to React-based architectures.
  • Experience with micro-frontend or modular web application patterns.
  • Familiarity with design systems, reusable component libraries, and shared platform capabilities.
  • Experience supporting customer identity, account, profile, or ownership-related digital products.
  • Experience with cloud-native application development, observability, and production support in enterprise environments.
