Job Description:

We are pleased to announce a semester-long residential teaching fellowship in Washington, DC, open to practicing visual artists from all regions.

American University (AU) and Hamiltonian Artists invite applications for the newly established Visiting Artist Teaching Fellowship for the Spring 2027 semester (from January to May 2027). This fellowship is for practicing visual artists who are committed to artist mentorship and studio-driven pedagogy. It offers fully funded housing, studio space, and a paid graduate-level teaching appointment of ARTS 675 (Graduate Studio) in the MFA Studio Art Program at American University.

The MFA course will provide students with personalized studio guidance, critiques, and discussions with practicing artists allowing for extensive engagement with professionals in the field who can act as mentors. The Fellow will also participate in end-of-semester graduate critique reviews.

The fellowship provides opportunities to engage with Hamiltonian's community of Fellows, including invitations to participate in core fellowship programming. Additionally, the fellow will have the opportunity to host a public event at Hamiltonian, such as an open studio.

The Fellowship offers comprehensive support: $5,900 teaching salary for a graduate course, $2,000 residency honorarium, $1,000 stipend for a public lecture and travel expenses. Fully funded housing and studio provided by Hamiltonian Artists in Washington, DC.

Applicants should have an MFA or an anticipated MFA completion by January 15, 2027.

The priority deadline for applications is September 15, 2026, at 5:00 PM ET.
