The New York City Department of Transportation, Division of Bridges is responsible for managing the full life cycle of over 800 bridges and tunnels and over 600 retaining walls, ensuring safety of the public and ensuring mobility for all users. Team members may work on major project designs, oversee construction, oversee maintenance activities, perform engineering reviews and quality assurance tasks on some of the most iconic and complex projects in the City.
Under supervision, serves as an Assistant Civil Engineer in the Bridge Management Section of the Bureau of Bridge Maintenance, Inspections, and Operations, Division of Bridges. The Division is responsible for the safety, reliability, and long-term serviceability of New York City's bridge infrastructure. Within the Division, the Bridge Management Section connects bridge inspection findings, load rating results, asset inventory, maintenance needs, and engineering evaluations with long-term capital planning. The selected candidate will support the Scoping Unit in identifying bridge rehabilitation, replacement, and component rehab needs, and assisting in the development of project scoping documents, cost estimates, capital planning materials, and related budget reports. The selected candidate will assist senior engineering staff in reviewing bridge inspection reports, inventory data, condition ratings, maintenance records, and other available information to help determine project needs and priorities. The position provides valuable exposure to bridge asset management, project scoping, capital program development, budget coordination, and coordination with other bridge units and capital delivery groups.
Preferred skills
Possession of an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification is highly desirable.
Strong foundational grasp of structural engineering and basic civil infrastructure concepts.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Ability to coordinate with multiple technical groups and follow up on required information.
Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, Access, GIS, AutoCAD, and engineering databases is preferred.
Good written and verbal communication skills for generating summaries and memos, solid organizational habits, and an ability to collaborate effectively across multiple technical teams.

Qualifications

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college in civil engineering and one year of full-time satisfactory experience in civil engineering work; or
2. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and a Master's degree from an accredited college in civil engineering.
