Job description

Company Description

We spend a great deal of our time online. Whether it's for information, commerce, or entertainment, each of us has come to depend on what we research, discover, and share. Publishers - those who create and curate content - are what makes the Internet great. Yet these publishers practice their craft largely alone, in siloes - without reference points or insightful understanding about where they sit in the grand scheme of things. To add to the challenge, once a Publisher's content is in the wild, then the task of building engagement, growing a loyal following and enriching the engagement with that following can sometimes feel like shots in the dark or worse, a black box. Moreover, making money from their craft can be a complex task for any independent publisher who might prioritize generating content first and money second.

Sovrn believes that independent publishers are the Internet's vibrancy. As a partner and advocate to tens of thousands of independent publishers, Sovrn provides tools, technologies and services that help publishers (a) make money; (b) get distribution to grow their audience; and (c) access a massive data commons providing extraordinary insights.

The landscape of content networks, adtech vendors, and the myriad of buy-side / sell-side companies can be a complete maze for any reasonable person to decipher. Sovrn cuts through the noise and simplifies things with a basic, straightforward mission:

Help content creators do more of what they want to do - and less of what they don't.

Job Description

As a Staff Engineer on Sovrn's PubTech Team you will help drive the success of Sovrn's video advertising platform by developing new features and products. We are looking for an experienced engineer that feels comfortable using JavaScript (extensive), CSS, HTML5, and REST APIs. You'll also have the opportunity to work with Hive, Hadoop, and Java. Additionally, you will be responsible for mentoring more junior engineers and aid in facilitating daily stand-ups.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Mentor / coach Junior Engineers, including code reviews
  • Facilitate daily stand-ups and act as "Scrum Master" within our feature team based environment
  • Work within a fast paced agile team to build highly scalable and performant systems
  • Use JavaScript to delivery browser-side control code facilitating video ad delivery
  • Adhere to the VAST and VPAID specifications
  • Interact with modern database technologies
  • Address the challenge of delivering products in a SASS environment
Qualifications
  • 5+ years of object-oriented browser-based programming
  • Strong knowledge of Javascript (ECMAScript 3 and up), HTML5, and CSS
  • Strong knowledge of Legacy Browsers
  • Familiarity with Java
  • Understanding of relational databases
  • Knowledge of design patterns and their consequences
  • Ability to clearly communicate software design
  • Comfortable working directly with business partners
  • Comfortable with Unix operating systems and the command line environment
  • Experience using Git or other SCCS systems
  • Strong desire to expand and improve your software engineering skills
  • BS in Computer Science or Information Systems, or equivalent experience

BONUS POINTS!

  • Open source project contributions
  • Experience with noSQL databases (Hive, Hadoop, Cassandra)
  • Experience with ActionScript 3
  • Previous experience in a SASS environment
  • Familiarity with ad products and internet marketing
