Position Summary
Provide police service that otherwise would be lost or delayed because of workload saturation on sworn officers, relieve sworn officer of non-related or low priority police service so that they may pursue anti-crime activities more effectively. Collect and preserve physical evidence in the field; ensure the preservation of all items taken into evidence and testify in court regarding the chain of custody and integrity of evidence.
Police Service Aids are encouraged to proceed into the sworn rank.
Police Service Aids are encouraged to apply for sworn rank when eligible and if rejected, may reapply for the next class.
This is a safety sensitive position subject to random drug/alcohol testing.
This is an unclassified at-will position.

Essential and Supplemental Functions
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Essentialfunctions may include, but are not limited to the functions listed below. Mustbe able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without areasonable accommodation.
  1. Direct traffic.
  2. Conduct on-street, non-injury accident investigations.
  3. Complete private property accident reports.
  4. Handle abandoned vehicles.
  5. Enforce parking regulations.
  6. Assist motorists.
  7. Handle and write reports on found items.
  8. Respond to non-violent and misdemeanor crimes where no suspect information is available.
  9. Take simple vandalism and petty larceny reports.
  10. Handle missing person's reports.
  11. Provide assistance to investigative officers at accident and crime scenes such as directing traffic, taking measurements.
  12. Conduct house and business checks.
  13. Conduct beat check (as supplement to beat officer checks.)
  14. Take reports on found or recovered bicycles.
  15. Check on welfare of elderly or infirm persons.
  16. Transport victims and witness to and from the police station and children to care facilities.
  17. Complete tow-in report and wait for wrecker.
  18. Conduct police vehicle transport activities.
  19. Photograph non-violent crime scenes and evidence utilizing macro and micro-photographic techniques.
  20. Perform fingerprint comparisons and classifications using various powders and chemical techniques.
  21. Pick up and deliver message or items for officer; deliver correspondence between the main station and substations.
SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:
  1. Perform related duties as necessary or assigned.

Minimum Education, Experience And Additional Requirements
Must be a minimum of 18 years of age
Possess a High school diploma or GED
Must pass the Police Service Aide Written Examination and other required examinations
Must pass a Class I physical examination
Vision must be correct to 20/30 or better in both eyes
Must be a United States citizen or have a valid work permit
Must be able to do work shift work
Must not have any felony convictions
Must pass rigid background investigation
Intention of becoming a police officer is preferred.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of a valid New Mexico Driver's License, or the ability to obtain by date of hire.
Possession of a City Operator's Permit (COP) within 6 months from date of hire.
Working Conditions
Environmental:
Field environment, travel from site to site, exposure to potentially hostile environment.
Physical:
Essential and supplemental functions require maintaining physical condition necessary for walking, standing, or sitting for prolonged periods of time; and operating vehicles.
