About the Position:

Harris Health System is seeking a Critical Care Transport Nurse (CCT RN) to provide advanced patient care in both the Emergency Center and ambulance transport settings. This highly specialized nursing role involves assessing, monitoring, and stabilizing critically ill patients while coordinating with the LBJ Emergency Center faculty and Harris Health System EMS Medical Director. The CCT RN is a clinical leader and resource for the emergency care team and is responsible for delivering education, evaluating training programs, and developing new protocols.

This role requires a high level of expertise in emergency medicine, trauma care, and critical care transport, including hands-on experience with ventilators, infusion pumps, intra-aortic balloon pumps, LVADs, chest tube monitoring, and hemodynamic monitoring devices. Candidates must be proficient in rapid response, advanced airway management, and emergency procedures during transport.

Responsibilities:
  • Provide critical care support for high-acuity patients in the Emergency Center and during transport to other medical facilities.
  • Collaborate with physicians, EMS teams, and emergency center staff to ensure safe and efficient patient transfers.
  • Serve as a clinical leader, mentor, and educator for nursing staff, preceptors, and interdisciplinary teams.
  • Perform advanced procedures, including intubations, rapid sequence intubation (RSI), supraglottic adjuncts, intraosseous needle insertion, EKG monitoring, and STEMI, stroke, and multi-system trauma assessments.
  • Ensure compliance with EMS regulations, emergency protocols, and hospital policies.
  • Complete mandatory quarterly education, skills assessments, and protocol testing with a passing score of 85% or higher.

Requirements:Education:
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred; Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) accepted.
Licenses & Certifications:
  • Registered Nurse (RN) - Texas Board of Nursing
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) - American Heart Association (AHA) or Red Cross approved
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) - AHA or Red Cross approved
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) - AHA or Red Cross approved
  • Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNCC) - Emergency Nurses Association (ENA)
  • Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN) - Board of Certifications for Emergency Nurses (BCEN)
  • Trauma Certified Registered Nurse (TCRN) - BCEN (within 1 year of hire)
  • Certified Transport Registered Nurse (CTRN), Certified Flight Registered Nurse (CFRN), or Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN) - BCEN or AACN (within 18 months of hire)
  • NIH Stroke Scale Certification (within 30 days of hire)
  • EMT-Paramedic (EMT-P) - Texas Department of Health (preferred)
Experience:
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in an Emergency Center or ICU, with at least 4,000 critical care hours.
  • 1 year of clinical leadership experience, meeting at least two of the following:
    • Charge Nurse experience
    • Critical Care Lead experience
    • Preceptor experience
Additional Requirements:
  • Successfully complete annual simulation scenarios, including:
    • Code Blue management
    • Rapid sequence intubation (RSI)
    • EKG monitoring
    • STEMI, stroke, and multi-system trauma evaluations
  • Annual Cadaver Lab Training – Must complete:
    • 5 successful intubations with video laryngoscope
    • Needle decompression
    • Cricothyrotomy
    • Intraosseous needle insertion
  • Complete 20 annual intubations with an 85% success rate.
  • Participate in Critical Care Transport Ride Outs – Minimum of 10 patient contacts required.
  • Pass protocol test with a score of at least 85%.
  • Attend mandatory monthly meetings and quarterly education sessions.
