About Great Oaks Charter School - Wilmington

The Great Oaks (GO) Charter School - Wilmington opened in downtown Wilmington in the fall of 2015. This school year, Great Oaks - Wilmington serves 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grades. Great Oaks provides a unique structure of support for its students. We are committed to provide a high dosage of mentorship and individualized learning to help Great Oaks students reach their maximum potential.

Secondary Special Education Teacher

Job Outline:

  • Small group and co-teaching for students with IEP's in High School
  • Collaboratively develop lesson plans for small group instruction based on student IEP goals.
  • Collect data for progress monitoring.
  • This is a 10-month position and you must be available to work on all scheduled instructional and professional development days.
  • Proof of certification is required.

Great teachers are at the heart of what we do and are essential to our students' success in college and beyond. The Special Education Teacher is responsible for ensuring that every student at Great Oaks is supported in their academic growth and achievement.

This role includes maintaining accurate records for students with special needs, supporting the implementation and evaluation of IEPs, co-teaching, and coordinating service schedules. The Special Education Teacher ensures that students receive appropriate accommodations in both classroom and tutorial settings.

In addition, this educator will collaborate closely with classroom teachers to develop assessments aligned to Common Core standards, analyze student performance data, and support data-driven instructional decisions.

Throughout the year, the Special Education Teacher will:

Ensure that the school is meeting the needs of all students by:

  • Facilitating necessary testing for placement
  • Reviewing the needs of incoming students, and monitoring student performance data
  • Maintaining consistent communications with families regarding student progress
  • Facilitating the evaluation/reevaluation process
  • Ensuring that all general education teachers and paras know and understand the needs of their students with special needs and appropriate accommodations to use

Maintain a strong classroom culture by:

  • Clearly and consistently communicating and upholding school rules, values, and expectations in and out of the classroom
  • Setting an urgent, respectful, and positive tone in the classroom
  • Displaying extraordinary time management to maximize student learning and sense of urgency
  • Building relationships with students that communicate that succeeding in college is important, that the student can do it, and that we will not give up on a student

Competencies and Qualifications

The successful candidate will demonstrate exceptional relationship-building skills and the ability to communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders. In addition, the candidate will possess:

  • A strong academic record, including a bachelor's degree from a competitive college or university (required); an advanced degree in the subject area is strongly preferred
  • Three to five years of experience improving student achievement in an urban school setting
  • A state teaching certification in the relevant content area, with an initial or continuing license (required)
  • Strong classroom management skills
  • A firm belief that all students can succeed
  • A "do whatever it takes" attitude, including a willingness to occasionally work evenings or weekends
  • The ability to receive feedback constructively and implement it quickly and effectively

Competencies and Qualifications

The successful candidate will have proven success in implementing high-quality instruction that leads to the improvement of student achievement in an urban school. S/he will possess exceptional relationship-building skills and the ability to communicate clearly to multiple stakeholders. The successful candidate will also have:

  • A strong academic record with a Bachelor's degree from a competitive college or university is required; an advanced degree in the subject area preferred
  • At least two years of experience improving student achievement at an urban school, preferred
  • State teaching certification in World Language - French and/or Spanish (strongly preferred)
  • Extremely strong classroom management abilities
  • A strong belief that all students can succeed
  • A do-whatever-it-takes attitude including a willingness to work occasionally on the weekend or in the evening
  • An exceptional ability to respond well to feedback and implement it immediately

This position is for the 2026-2027 school year and the successful candidate will start in August of 2026. Selected candidates will be contacted to set up an interview.
