Inside the Role

Thomas Built Bus designs, builds and sells school buses for the American and Canadian market. The vehicles are type C built over a Freightliner chassis, type D with front and rear engine variants built over Thomas chassis, and type A minibuses built over Ford and General Motors chassis. This role will be focused on the design of the school bus bodies and related components and installations for these products and any related testing and compliance.
Successful candidates will apply the theoretical principles, engineering techniques and practical experience towards leading a team responsible for designing vehicles that are safe, compliant, reliable, serviceable, energy efficient, competitive and use the latest technology available in the industry.

What You Drive at DTNA

• Apply engineering techniques and principles to design and develop school bus interior/exterior body products, components and systems.
• Apply CAD principles to develop 3D models, installation drawings and Bills of Materials.
• Independently analyze and proactively provide creative, technically feasible solutions to problems encountered in production. Promptly resolve product build issues.
• Collaborate with Product Strategy, Production, Manufacturing Engineering, Purchasing, Fabrication, Quality and other departments to implement manufacturable and cost-effective design solutions that meet government regulations and specifications.
• Interface with Test & Compliance personnel to prototype new systems, perform development testing and apply test results to new designs.
• Manage and prioritize projects/assignments for a team of mechanical design engineers. Proactively inform management of project issues, delays and risks.
• Review and provide feedback on the work output for the responsible design engineering team.
• Research state-of-the-art developments in the vehicle industry and apply the latest advances and best practices as appropriate.

Knowledge You Should Bring

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering/Mechanical Engineering Technology and 5+ years of design engineering experience required
• Demonstrated teamwork, cross-functional collaboration, and strong written and verbal communication skills
• Experience with 3D CAD design required (Creo preferred)
• Experience with Microsoft Office products
• An attached resume is required

Exceptional Candidates Might Have

• Understanding of Engineering and Manufacturing processes and downstream impacts, along with the ability to identify and solve problems on the assembly line.
• Knowledge of sheet metal fabrication processes i.e. press brake, roll forming, fasteners, stampings, etc.
• Working knowledge of FMVSS standards as they relate to school buses.
• Working knowledge of DTNA or TBB Engineering Documentation systems.
• Project Management skills.
