Freelance Writing Editing information

What is freelance writing and editing?

Freelance writing and editing refers to providing writing, proofreading, and editing services to clients on a contract or project basis, rather than as a full-time employee. Freelance writers create content such as articles, blogs, marketing materials, or technical documents, while editors review and refine this content for clarity, grammar, and style. Freelancers have the flexibility to choose their clients and projects, set their own schedules, and often work remotely. This career path requires strong writing skills, attention to detail, and the ability to meet deadlines. Many freelancers build their reputation and client base through portfolios, networking, and online platforms.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance writing editor?

To thrive as a Freelance Writing Editor, you need advanced writing, grammar, and editing skills, often supported by a degree in English, journalism, or communications. Familiarity with content management systems (CMS), style guides such as AP or Chicago, and editing tools like Grammarly or Hemingway Editor is typically required. Strong time management, attention to detail, and effective client communication set successful editors apart. These skills ensure the delivery of polished, accurate content that meets client needs and industry standards.

What are some common challenges faced by freelance writing editors, and how can they overcome them?

Freelance writing editors often face challenges such as managing multiple client deadlines, maintaining consistent communication, and adapting to different writing styles or editorial guidelines. To overcome these hurdles, it's important to use reliable project management tools to track assignments and deadlines, establish clear expectations with clients upfront, and continually hone editing skills to remain adaptable. Building a strong professional network and seeking feedback can also help editors stay competitive and connected in the freelance market.

What is the difference between Freelance Writing Editing vs Freelance Content Writing?

While both roles involve writing skills, Freelance Writing Editing focuses on improving existing content, whereas Freelance Content Writing emphasizes creating new material. Understanding these differences helps freelancers target the right opportunities and develop relevant skills.

Do writing editors make good money?

Writing editors can earn a wide range of salaries depending on experience, industry, and location, with many freelance editors earning between $25 and $75 per hour or more. Experienced editors with specialized skills or working for established clients tend to earn higher rates, and some may supplement income through multiple projects or ongoing contracts.

How much do freelance writing editors make?

Freelance writing editors typically earn between $20 and $50 per hour, depending on experience, specialization, and project complexity. Many also charge per word or per project, with rates varying widely based on skill level and client requirements.

How to get into freelance writing editing?

To start a career in freelance writing editing, build strong writing and editing skills, create a portfolio of your work, and join freelance platforms or job boards to find opportunities. Gaining experience through internships or volunteering can also help establish credibility and attract clients.

Job description

Description

We are ERock!

ERock is a leader and innovator in distributed energy. ERock has responded to long-term trends in electricity by becoming the first smart-grid supplier to US energy consumers. The company installs, operates, and integrates its highly flexible, low-cost, and quick-response distributed generation to increase reliability and stability, reduce costs and decrease carbon footprint.

At ERock our backup generators ensure that customers will never be without power, allowing their business to operate normally when there is an outage in the area. Our innovative approach provides customers with highly reliable, ultra-clean backup generation at a fraction of the cost of traditional backup solutions. We seek those who share our commitment to customer service, innovation, and ingenuity.

Role Overview:

We're looking for a Creative Director to be the hands-on creative engine for our marketing team. This is a doer role: you'll personally produce the work rather than oversee a large internal team. You'll also manage outside agencies and freelancers when projects call for extra capacity. The ideal candidate has spent years in agency environments working on recognizable brands, knows how to move fast without sacrificing craft, and can shift between a board-level presentation in the morning and a video edit from a trade show in the afternoon.ย

You'll work closely with the CMO and other executives to maintain a consistent, polished visual identity across every format the company touches: investor and sales presentations, marketing collateral, the website and digital properties, and live events.ย

Key Responsibilities:ย

  • Design presentations for investor relations, sales, and internal communications, translating dense or technical content into clear, well-built decksย
  • Produce marketing materials including sales collateral, one-pagers, brochures, and digital ad assetsย
  • Maintain and evolve brand guidelines, and act as the internal check on visual consistency across teamsย
  • Bring an enthusiasm for and understanding of AI tools to improve the creative workflow processย
  • Lead the visual execution of events: trade show booths, signage, environmental graphics, and swagย
  • Partner with corporate communications, technical writing and growth marketing to develop campaigns and materialsย
  • Oversee website and digital design work, including landing pages, email templates, and campaign assetsย
  • Manage video editing for corporate communications, social content, and event recap reelsย
  • Brief and manage outside agencies and freelancers on overflow or specialized projects such as photography shoots, video edits and website designย
  • Partner directly with the CMO and executive team on high-visibility, fast-turnaround projectsย

Requirements

Basic (Required) Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of professional design experience, including time at an agency working on well-known, established brandsย
  • A portfolio showing strong, versatile work across presentations, print, digital, and webย
  • Fluency in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Premiere) and Figma; strong PowerPoint or Keynote skillsย
  • The ability to work independently, manage multiple projects at once, and execute without heavy creative direction from othersย
  • Based in, or willing to relocate to, the Houston or Austin area. ERock has a 2 day remote / 3 day in office-policy. An Austin based candidate will require 2 days per week in office with overnight accommodation.ย

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience designing for an investor or public-company audienceย
  • Background in energy, industrial, or infrastructure sectorsย
  • Motion graphics or animation skillsย
  • Shoot and edit photography for corporate, event, and facility useย
  • Video editing proficiency (Premiere Pro or equivalent) for short-form corporate and social contentย

Benfits:

  • Competitive Pay
  • Medical, Dental, Vision, and Prescription Drug Insurance
  • Company-Paid Life Insurance
  • Flexible Spending Account (FSA)
  • Health Savings Account (HSA) with a company contribution
  • Wellness Programs and Incentives
  • 401(k) Retirement Plan & Company Match
  • Paid Time Off - Sick & Vacation Time
  • Paid Holidays
  • Hybrid Work Schedule!
