Job description

THOR Solutions is actively seeking a mission-focused professional to support the U.S. Navyโ€™s Surface Warfare Engineering Schools Command (SWESC) Great Lakes, IL as a Damage Control (DC) Firefighting Instructor. The instructor will deliver technical and military training, including instruction, testing, remediation, curriculum updates, administration, and safety services for formalized naval training.
Typical Responsibilities:
  • Provide technical and military training to Department of Defense (DoD) personnel, including U.S. Navy and Allied Forces officers and enlisted personnel.
  • Support curriculum updates and maintenance, testing, and remediation.
  • Utilize training aids, electronic podiums, lab equipment, and other instructional tools effectively.
  • Ensure adherence to safety protocols during training evolutions.

Location:ย Full time onsite at SWESC in Great Lakes, IL.
Typical Physical Activity:
  • Desk/computer work in an office environment and training/instructor work in a classroom environment. May involve: repetitive motion, hearing, or talking.
  • Must be capable of performing all high-risk training evolutions, which include ascending/ descending ladders, navigating narrow passageways, and enduring extreme heat.

Typical Pay Range:ย The anticipated pay range for this position in the identified location(s) is $27.51/hour base pay + $4.93/hour โ€œhealth & welfareโ€ payment, for a combined total $32.44/hour. Actual compensation offered will be based upon individual factors including education, qualifications, and experience.
Existing Secret Security Clearance Required: This position requires an existing DoD Secret security clearance. A qualified candidate will already possess an Active or Interim Secret security clearance. An otherwise strongly qualified candidate with highly relevant experience but no current security clearance may be considered.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:ย 
  • Graduate of the Navy Instructor Training Course (CIN: A-012-0077) or equivalent (NEC 9502).
  • Former Senior (E5โ€“E9) Surface Ship Damage Controlman or similar rating.
  • Graduate of the following courses:
    • General Shipboard Firefighting Training โ€“ SCBA (A-495-0416)
    • Shipboard Damage Control Team Trainer (K-495-0045)
  • At least three (3) years of technical experience in Damage Control.
  • At least two (2) years of experience in a Military Training Environment.
  • Strong knowledge of learning principles, presentation methods, testing, remediation, and training equipment.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of safety protocols, diesel inspection processes, and shipboard firefighting and damage control procedures.
  • Experience with ATG.
  • Shipboard firefighting experience.
  • Current Basic EMT qualification or higher.
  • Proficiency with common productivity software including Microsoft Office.
  • Strong communication skills.

Additional Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Navy Damage Controlman Chief Petty Officer (CPO) or Engineering Department Leader (e.g., EN, GS, EM).
