What is a freelance web developer?

A freelance web developer is an independent professional who designs, builds, and maintains websites for clients on a project or contract basis, rather than working as a full-time employee for a single company. They often work with a range of clients, including businesses, organizations, and individuals, offering services such as website creation, updates, troubleshooting, and optimization. Freelance web developers typically manage their own schedules, find their own clients, and may specialize in areas like front-end, back-end, or full-stack development. They use a variety of programming languages and tools depending on the requirements of each project. This career offers flexibility, but also requires self-motivation and strong communication skills to manage client relationships effectively.

What does a freelance web developer do?

Freelance web developers create eye-catching and user-friendly websites to generate web traffic and promote their clients' products and services. Unlike staff web developers, freelance web developers are independent contractors who may work for an individual or business on a short- or long-term basis. As a freelance web developer, you determine your target audience based on your client's customer base and design a website to attract new customers and keep current customers interested. You may also meet with your client to ensure you understand their expectations and wants for their website. When developing a design, you may collaborate with a team to create a new site or find ways to improve an existing one. Functionality and aesthetic appeal are your two primary goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance web developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Freelance Web Developer, you need strong proficiency in programming languages like HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and often frameworks such as React or Vue, supported by a solid portfolio of completed projects. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, content management systems (e.g., WordPress), and basic SEO or web analytics tools is typically expected. Excellent time management, self-motivation, and clear client communication are crucial soft skills for managing multiple projects and building client relationships. These qualities are essential for delivering high-quality work independently, meeting client expectations, and sustaining a successful freelance business.

How do freelance web developers typically manage client communication and project expectations?

Freelance web developers often handle all aspects of client communication themselves, from initial consultations to project delivery and support. Effective communication is crucial for understanding client goals, setting clear timelines, and managing expectations regarding deliverables and revisions. Many freelancers use project management tools, regular progress updates, and detailed contracts to ensure both parties are aligned throughout the process. This proactive approach helps prevent misunderstandings and builds strong client relationships, which are essential for repeat business and referrals.

Job description

Quidient is a deep tech AI company pioneering advancements in Generalized (5D) Scene Reconstruction (GSR). GSR is poised to become one of the world's great digital product categories (think GPS, MRI, and LMM). Our flagship GSR product, Quidient Reality®, is a powerful API that enables anyone with a mobile device to virtualize, visualize, and measure anything. Words relevant to Quidient include Generative AI, Physics-Informed AI, Large Scene Models (LSMs), Large World Models (LWMs), and API-First.
Overview
We're seeking an iOS Engineer with deep expertise in mobile 3D applications and spatial computing. You will own end-to-end delivery of major iOS features, driving our product from development to production-ready solutions. This role demands mastery of iOS development, the ability to cut through ambiguity, and ownership of complex systems in a fast-moving environment.
This is a hybrid position, meaning that you will need to live within easy driving distance to our Technology Center in Columbia, Maryland.
What You'll Do
Feature Development & Architecture
  • Own end-to-end delivery of major iOS features, taking Quidient's 5D product and SDK from prototype to production with a focus on reliability and performance.
  • Architect and design new capabilities within existing iOS codebases, establishing patterns that scale as our product line grows.
  • Drive technical decisions on how Quidient builds SDKs and apps from internal frameworks, developing long term sustainable solutions that mature over time.
  • Build and optimize 5D mobile applications leveraging ARKit, RealityKit, Metal, and GPU acceleration for high-performance, low-latency experiences.
  • Collaborate cross functionally with SDET, Algorithm, and Infrastructure teams to harden features for production and integrate CI/CD pipelines.
  • Design and implement RESTful APIs and integrate with server side technologies to support mobile backend communication.
  • Assemble complex solutions from loosely defined requirements, navigating ambiguity.
  • Mentor and influence technical direction across the iOS team as the product scales.
What You Bring
Must-Have Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science or related engineering field.
  • 7+ years of industry experience in iOS development; freelance acceptable but must include experience with large, complex codebases (not simple sandbox or siloed apps).
  • 3+ years of experience building 3D applications or working with spatial computing technologies.
  • Deep expertise in iPhone app development using Swift, with recent hands-on iOS.
  • Heavy iOS framework experience including ARKit, AVFoundation, Core Location, Core Motion, VisionKit, RealityKit, ImageIO, and CoreML.
  • Experience developing web based applications using modern front end technologies and server-side technologies.
  • Strong experience in RESTful API design and development.
  • Experience in coding languages such as C++ and Python.
  • Demonstrated ability to assemble complex solutions from loosely defined requirements without clear PRDs or design documentation.
  • Ownership mindset with ability to drive initiatives on a small team with minimal oversight.
  • Live within easy commuting distance of our Technology Center in Columbia, Maryland.
  • This position is not eligible for H-1B sponsorship.
  • Meet Quidient, customer, and government security requirements, which may include, but are not limited to a background check, citizenship verification, and Criminal Justice Information Services verification.
Nice-to-Have Qualifications:
  • Experience deploying high-performance, low-latency applications.
  • Experience creating computer vision or image processing applications.
  • Metal and GPU programming experience.
  • Knowledge of Android app development (Kotlin) or cross-platform frameworks (Flutter).
  • Knowledge of cloud products and platforms, microservice architectures, automation, and API integration.
What We Offer
Compensation:
  • Salary Range: $165,000 - $200,000.
  • Annual bonus and equity as appropriate.
Benefits:
  • Health insurance
  • HSA Account
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Life & disability insurance
  • Paid holidays & generous PTO
  • Opportunities for bonuses, equity, and career growth
