Job description

Contract Duration

Initial 40hr weekly 3-month period with the option to extend to 6 months or full time

Location

Open to remote or DC local, with a preference for in-person work if there's interest in converting to a full-time role

Role Overview

As a contract Product Designer (or UI/UX Designer) at Switchboard, you'll be doing hands-on design work across our product alongside engineering and product teams shipping features real campaigns depend on. This is a 3-month contract with room to extend to 6 months or go full time for the right person. Design here is early-stage - you'll have real ownership over your work and a solid design system to build on. Good fit for someone who wants to go deep on complex, data-rich product problems in a mission-driven environment.

Responsibilities
  • Owning focused design tasks end-to-end, from early exploration through production-ready specs
  • Partnering with engineering and product to deliver considered UI and UX across 3 cross-functional pods
  • Producing design artifacts such as diagrams, wireframes, prototypes, and more that support product development discussions and cross-functional alignment
  • Providing UI & simple UX consultations for engineers extending design system patterns
  • Iterating rapidly based on user feedback, usage data, and input from the team
  • Contributing to and extending our design system to keep patterns consistent and scalable

If contract is extended or expanded to full time…

Scope and surface area would grow

Ideal Candidates
  • 3+ years of UI/UX and product design experience, ideally on complex or data-rich products
  • Comfortable picking up an existing design system and extending it without starting from scratch
  • You take work through to completion and enjoy the iteration part, not just the exploration
  • Can produce artifacts that move conversations forward and get teams aligned
  • Works well with context but doesn't need a script. You can make good calls and flag the right questions
  • Communicates clearly (verbally and visually) and is responsive to feedback from our engineering, product, and customer experience teams
  • Excited to work in the progressive political and advocacy space (experience is a plus)
Compensation
  • $110-175/hr, commensurate with experience
  • Initial 3-month contract with the option to extend to 6 months
  • Strong performers will be considered for conversion to a full-time role, which includes full benefits (health, dental, vision, 401K, PTO, and parental leave)
  • Vibrant hybrid workplace in Washington D.C.
