What is freelance structural packaging design?

Freelance structural packaging design involves creating the physical shape, structure, and functionality of packaging for products, working independently rather than as a full-time employee. Designers in this field focus on developing innovative, practical, and attractive packaging solutions that protect products, enhance branding, and improve the customer experience. Freelancers may work with various materials such as cardboard, plastics, or eco-friendly options, and collaborate with brands, manufacturers, and printers to bring packaging concepts to life. Their work often combines engineering, graphic design, and marketing knowledge to meet client needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance structural packaging designer?

To excel as a Freelance Structural Packaging Designer, you need a strong background in industrial or packaging design, materials knowledge, and proficiency in 3D modeling and prototyping. Familiarity with CAD software (such as ArtiosCAD or SolidWorks), dieline creation, and an understanding of printing processes are typically required. Creative problem-solving, effective communication, and time management are essential soft skills for collaborating with clients and managing multiple projects. These competencies are crucial for delivering innovative, functional packaging solutions that meet client needs and industry standards.

What are some common challenges freelance structural packaging designers face when working with clients remotely?

Freelance structural packaging designers often encounter challenges such as communicating complex design concepts and ensuring that their creative vision aligns with the client’s brand and manufacturing constraints. Working remotely also means relying heavily on digital prototypes, which can make it harder to evaluate the tactile aspects of packaging until physical samples are produced. Additionally, coordinating with multiple stakeholders—such as brand managers, printers, and manufacturers—requires strong project management and clear documentation to avoid miscommunication and delays.

Job description

Job Title: Senior Structural Project Engineer (Industrial & Capital Infrastructure)
Role Overview
We are seeking a Senior Structural Project Engineer to serve as a cornerstone of our design team. You will be responsible for the end-to-end structural analysis and design of complex, large-scale industrial projects. This role is for a seasoned engineer who is ready to move beyond routine calculations and take full ownership of structural scopes-from the initial design concepts to final construction documentation.
You will act as the technical "go-to" person for your team, balancing complex structural modeling with project-level leadership. Whether acting as the Structural Lead on medium-sized projects or as a key Sub-Lead on massive capital investments, you will mentor junior engineers, drive innovative workflows, and ensure that our structural designs are not only technically sound but also constructible and budget-aligned.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership & Analysis
• Core Analysis: Independently execute conventional and complex structural analysis and design. You will plan and conduct work requiring high-level engineering judgment, independent evaluation, and adaptation of structural techniques.
• Lateral Systems Mastery: Apply advanced knowledge of lateral analysis and design (wind and seismic) in accordance with modern building codes and industry best practices.
• Quality & Ownership: Maintain an uncompromising commitment to quality control. You will be expected to perform rigorous self-checks and peer reviews on the calculations and models of other team members.
Project & Portfolio Management
• Standalone Responsibility: Take full ownership of your structural scope. You will define your own work packages, forecast level of effort, manage your project budget, and proactively identify scope changes before they impact the schedule.
• Integration & Coordination: Champion the integration of structural design with other disciplines (architectural, mechanical, process, and electrical). Use tools like Navisworks to resolve spatial conflicts and ensure design constructability.
• Mentorship: Provide technical guidance, coaching, and mentorship to junior engineers and design/drafting staff. Actively seek to improve structural workflows and embrace emerging technologies to drive efficiency.
Qualifications & Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
• Education: Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (Structural emphasis).
• Licensure: Professional Engineer (PE) license is required.
• Experience Baseline: Minimum of ten (10) years of experience in structural engineering within an industrial or commercial design environment.
• Technical Mastery:
oProficient in steel and concrete structural design.
oAdvanced proficiency in structural analysis software, Navisworks, and Bluebeam.
oDeep expertise in current US building codes and seismic provisions.
• Soft Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication; proven ability to manage client expectations and partner across diverse disciplines.
Preferred Attributes
• Advanced Education: Master's degree (MS) in Civil or Structural Engineering.
• Advanced Licensure: Structural Engineer (SE) License.
• Domain Expertise: Experience in large-scale industrial, manufacturing, or general heavy-infrastructure facilities.
• Leadership Experience: Experience leading technical teams on medium-to-large capital projects.
