Freelance Source Code Auditor information

What is a freelance source code auditor?

A freelance source code auditor is an independent professional who reviews and analyzes software source code to identify security vulnerabilities, coding errors, and compliance issues. They work with clients on a project or contract basis rather than as full-time employees. Their main goal is to ensure that the code is secure, efficient, and follows best practices, often providing detailed reports and recommendations for improvements. Freelance source code auditors may specialize in specific programming languages or industries and often work remotely. Their expertise helps organizations mitigate risks and maintain high-quality software.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance source code auditor?

To thrive as a Freelance Source Code Auditor, you need a strong background in programming languages, secure coding practices, and vulnerability assessment, often supported by a degree in computer science or relevant certifications like OSCP or CEH. Familiarity with automated code analysis tools, version control systems, and security frameworks is typically required. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and clear communication are crucial soft skills for identifying issues and conveying findings to clients. These skills ensure accurate detection of security flaws and effective collaboration, ultimately safeguarding clients' software assets.

What are some common challenges faced by freelance source code auditors when working with clients remotely?

Freelance Source Code Auditors often encounter challenges such as limited access to client systems, incomplete documentation, and varying coding standards across projects. Effective communication is essential to clarify requirements and expectations, especially when collaborating with geographically dispersed development teams. Additionally, managing multiple clients and staying updated on the latest security threats and compliance standards can require strong organizational and time-management skills.

Job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a CVE & Application Security AI Task Auditor - Freelance AI Trainer Project based in Netherlands.

This freelance opportunity is designed for experienced application security professionals who want to apply their expertise to the development and evaluation of advanced AI systems.
You will audit security-focused tasks used to train and evaluate AI models, ensuring they are technically accurate, realistic, reproducible, and practical.
The role involves reviewing Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) scenarios, vulnerability assessments, secure coding practices, and application security workflows.
You will evaluate whether security tasks can be reliably solved, tested, and validated against clearly defined evaluation criteria.
Your technical judgment will help identify vulnerabilities, exploit execution flaws, mitigation issues, and other security-related inconsistencies.
The project offers a flexible, remote environment where specialized security knowledge can directly influence the quality and reliability of AI evaluation workflows.
As a freelance contributor, you will work independently on challenging technical assignments while helping ensure AI systems are assessed against realistic application security scenarios.

Accountabilities
  • Evaluate CVE and application security tasks to determine whether they are technically accurate, realistic, solvable, reproducible, and supported by reliable tests and evaluation criteria.
  • Review security scenarios involving vulnerability assessment, secure coding, threat modeling, and application security practices for technical accuracy and practical relevance.
  • Assess vulnerability descriptions, exploitation scenarios, expected outcomes, and mitigation approaches to ensure they are logically sound and technically valid.
  • Identify security vulnerabilities, exploit execution flaws, mitigation logic errors, and other issues that could compromise task quality or evaluation accuracy.
  • Rigorously test and troubleshoot complex security scenarios to validate task behavior, exploitability, remediation logic, and expected results.
  • Provide clear, actionable technical feedback on identified security issues and recommend improvements where appropriate.
  • Apply specialized application security expertise to ensure AI training and evaluation tasks meet high standards of technical rigor, accuracy, and reproducibility.
  • Document technical findings clearly and consistently across assigned project tasks.
Requirements
  • Demonstrable professional experience and deep technical knowledge in Application Security, including vulnerability assessment, secure coding practices, and threat modeling.
  • Strong understanding of Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE), application vulnerabilities, exploitation concepts, and security mitigation strategies.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to rigorously test, troubleshoot, and evaluate complex technical security scenarios.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to identify subtle vulnerabilities, exploit execution issues, mitigation weaknesses, and logical inconsistencies.
  • Ability to objectively assess technical security tasks against requirements for accuracy, realism, solvability, reproducibility, and reliable evaluation.
  • Strong written communication skills for providing precise, constructive, and actionable technical feedback.
  • Ability to work independently and apply specialized expertise within a freelance, project-based environment.
  • Candidates will be considered for one area of specialization based on their professional experience; expertise across other domains is not required.
  • Ability to provide a secure computer and reliable high-speed internet connection for freelance project work.
Benefits
  • Compensation of $70-$100 per hour, with the exact rate determined based on experience, expertise, and geographic location.
  • Final compensation may vary from the published range following evaluation of your qualifications and location.
  • Freelance contract structure offering flexibility for project-based work.
  • Remote work environment.
  • Opportunity to contribute directly to the training and evaluation of advanced AI systems.
  • Opportunity to apply specialized application security expertise to technically challenging AI evaluation projects.
  • Health insurance, paid time off, and other company-sponsored employee benefits are not provided under the freelance contract.
  • Contractors are responsible for supplying their own secure computer and high-speed internet connection.
