What is a freelance software developer student?

A Freelance Software Developer Student is a student who works independently on software development projects while pursuing their studies. They typically take on short-term or contract-based work to build real-world experience, improve their coding skills, and earn income. These students often use platforms like Upwork or Fiverr to find clients, and they may work on tasks like building websites, creating apps, or fixing bugs. Balancing freelance work with academic responsibilities helps them develop time management and professional skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance software developer student?

To thrive as a Freelance Software Developer Student, you need a solid grasp of programming fundamentals, problem-solving abilities, and ongoing coursework or self-study in computer science. Familiarity with code versioning tools like Git, common programming languages (such as Python or JavaScript), and platforms like GitHub or Stack Overflow is typical. Strong time management, self-motivation, and effective communication help you balance learning with client work and collaboration. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering quality projects, building a professional reputation, and advancing both academically and professionally.

How do freelance software developer students typically find clients and manage projects while balancing their studies?

Freelance Software Developer Students often find clients through online platforms, networking events, or referrals within their academic and professional circles. Balancing freelance work with studies requires effective time management and setting clear expectations with clients regarding availability and deadlines. Many students use project management tools and maintain regular communication to ensure transparency and timely delivery. Collaborating with clients remotely is common, and students often work independently but may join small teams for larger projects, providing valuable real-world experience alongside their academic learning.

Job description

ABOUT THE TEAM

Anduril's Software Engineers excel at developing state-of-the-art algorithms and software that solve scientific problems with real-world applications. Working in small innovative teams, our software engineers build solutions that make a difference. Our research endeavors don't end once we've written a journal or conference paper describing our technology; rather, our work is complete when our technology has been deployed in mission-critical systems and our customers within government and industry are successful. As science fiction writer Arthur Clarke wrote, "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." Anduril is seeking talented "magicians" - experienced engineers who lead by example, mentor others, and stay deeply hands-on in the code - to join in our mission to expand the boundary of what's possible.

WHAT YOU WILL DO:
  • Help shape the technical direction of a small, high-impact team while remaining deeply hands-on in design, implementation, and code review
  • Mentor and uplevel junior and mid-level engineers through pair programming, code reviews, technical guidance, and architectural discussions
  • Lead by example by writing production-quality C++ and Python that powers mission-critical systems, while setting the bar for engineering excellence (CI/CD, unit testing, large-codebase collaboration, git workflows)
  • Prototype state-of-the-art software solutions in an agile development environment and guide the team through the path from prototype to deployed, tactical implementation
  • Implement high-performance software spanning the spectrum from tactical systems to web applications
  • Use high-fidelity modeling and simulation environments, innovative analysis tools, and sound analysis techniques to quantify the benefit of our technology
  • Drive technical interchange meetings, sprint planning, and customer engagements to ensure successful outcomes for mission-critical needs
  • Own all aspects of the software development lifecycle, helping the team navigate ambiguity and complex technical trade-offs
  • Communicate complex technical concepts clearly to colleagues, customers, and non-technical stakeholders
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • 8+ years of software engineering experience and a Bachelor's degree or equivalent education/work experience
  • Demonstrated experience mentoring junior engineers and providing technical leadership on a team, while continuing to contribute as a hands-on individual contributor
  • Experience supporting and navigating large, complex codebases as part of a collaborative team
  • Strong proficiency in C/C++ and Python
  • Big data/NoSQL/database technologies
  • Software engineering: software design, algorithm implementation, and software analysis, testing, and optimization
  • Machine learning: supervised and unsupervised learning, clustering, and classification
  • Applied mathematics: differential equations, linear algebra, optimization, statistics, and random processes
  • Engineering: controls, estimation theory, and digital signal processing
  • Eligible to obtain and maintain an active U.S. Top Secret SCI security clearance
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience leading small teams or technical workstreams while remaining a top individual contributor
  • Track record of growing engineers through mentorship, code review culture, and technical coaching
  • Experience with asynchronous programming, parallel programming, and GPU programming
  • Prior experience deploying software to real-world tactical/edge environments

We request transcripts as part of the early application process to understand your academic background and how your coursework supports the skills deemed critical for the role. Transcripts help us assess your technical and analytical abilities, complementing our interview process in which we also evaluate practical experience and cultural fit. If you choose not to share your transcripts, you will need to provide detailed information regarding your academic performance in relevant courses, including projects and coursework specifics, to ensure we evaluate your academic accomplishments properly. If you do provide academic transcripts, feel free to redact non-technical information (e.g., student ID, dates, non-technical coursework, etc.). Unofficial transcripts obtained online acceptable for this assessment.
