What is a CNC position?

CNC positions refer to jobs that involve working with Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines, which are automated tools used in manufacturing to cut, shape, and finish materials like metal, plastic, or wood. Common CNC positions include CNC operator, CNC machinist, CNC programmer, and CNC setup technician. These roles require skills in machine operation, blueprint reading, and sometimes programming. CNC professionals ensure parts are produced accurately and efficiently according to specifications. The demand for CNC workers is strong in industries like aerospace, automotive, and manufacturing.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a CNC position, and why are they important?

To thrive in CNC positions, you need a solid understanding of machining processes, blueprint reading, and math skills, often supported by a vocational certificate or associate degree in machining technology. Familiarity with CNC programming languages (like G-code), CAD/CAM software, and operation of various CNC machines is essential. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication help ensure accuracy and efficiency on the shop floor. These skills are crucial for maintaining high-quality production standards, minimizing errors, and contributing to a safe, productive manufacturing environment.

What are some common challenges CNC operators face, and how can they be addressed on the job?

CNC operators often encounter challenges such as machine downtime, tight production deadlines, and ensuring precision in every part produced. Addressing these issues typically involves regular equipment maintenance, proactive troubleshooting, and continuous communication with the engineering and quality assurance teams. Many shops also provide targeted training and encourage peer collaboration to help operators stay updated on new processes and technologies, making it easier to overcome these challenges and maintain smooth production flow.

What is the difference between Cnc Positions vs Cnc Machinist?

AspectCnc PositionsCnc Machinist

Job description

Senior CNC Programmer / Machinist – 5-Axis & Mastercam

Louisville, CO | Day Shift | Monday–Friday | Relocation Assistance

Serious Machines. Precision Work. No Night Shift.

If you're an experienced CNC Programmer who knows Mastercam, 5-axis machining, and CNC lathes, this is the kind of opportunity that doesn't come along often.

We're looking for a high-level CNC Programmer/Machinist to join a growing precision manufacturing operation supporting advanced plastic injection mold manufacturing.

This isn't a button-pushing position.

You'll program, set up, optimize, troubleshoot, and run sophisticated CNC equipment while machining complex components to extremely tight tolerances.

And you'll do it on a Monday–Friday, 7:00 AM–3:30 PM day shift.

What You'll Be Doing
  • Program, set up, and operate CNC 5-axis mills and CNC lathes

  • Create and optimize CAM programs using Mastercam

  • Develop efficient programs for complex 3-axis and 5-axis machining

  • Read and interpret detailed engineering drawings, blueprints, and 3D mold models

  • Determine tooling, speeds, feeds, cutting paths, reference points, and machining sequences

  • Optimize programs to improve cycle times and extend tool life

  • Machine complex components requiring tight tolerances

  • Make program and control adjustments to improve machine performance

  • Troubleshoot machining issues and make real-time corrections

  • Inspect finished components using calipers, micrometers, and other precision measuring equipment

  • Work closely with engineering, manufacturing, management, and tool-room personnel

What We're Looking For
  • 5+ years of CNC/CAM programming experience in precision machining

  • Strong Mastercam experience

  • 5+ years of recent experience programming and operating 5-axis CNC mills

  • 5+ years of recent experience programming and operating CNC lathes

  • Strong knowledge of speeds, feeds, tooling, workholding, and machining strategies

  • Ability to interpret complex engineering drawings and tolerances

  • Experience working with precision measuring instruments

  • CAD/CAM computer proficiency

  • Ability to independently take a complex part from drawing/model through finished component

Experience machining plastic injection molds is highly desirable.

Experience with thin-wall packaging molds is an especially strong plus.

Why This Opportunity Stands Out

You'll be joining an expanding U.S. operation backed by international expertise in precision mold manufacturing.

That means sophisticated equipment, challenging work, growth opportunities — and even the opportunity for overseas training in the Netherlands.

The company offers:

  • Extremely competitive compensation based on experience

  • Monday–Friday day shift — 7:00 AM–3:30 PM

  • Overtime opportunities after 40 hours

  • Clean, bright, climate-controlled manufacturing environment

  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and life insurance

  • 401(k) with company matching contributions

  • Company-provided branded work clothing

  • Overseas training opportunities

  • Relocation assistance

  • Opportunity to join a growing U.S. manufacturing operation

The Bottom Line

If you can sit down at Mastercam, program complex 5-axis work, set up the machine, troubleshoot the process, and produce precision parts that meet demanding tolerances — we want to hear from you.

Please send your resume to

Chuck LaBenski
